Hello !

Just wanna share the cake story.

2001. Most of my batchmates in senior year graduated in April while others including myself were still completing our hotel practicum. I volunteered to be an usher during the college graduation ceremony in UP Film Center to witness the most special day of a UP student. It was a happy sight, each of my friends went on the stage- well dressed, elegant shoes, wearing make up and the symbolic sablay.

As I clapped happily and congratulated each of my friends, a sad realization troubled my mind. Soon I will have to leave the very affordable dormitory and will need to rent outside the campus after my final semester. The last stipend I was given as a scholar won't be enough to buy business attire and office shoes, cover my transportation expenses from QC to Ortigas 5days a week x 3-4months, PC rental, printing and binding of my practicum report. I was on my own since August 1998 so money was always my limiting factor.

Graduation day came. I allocated whatever budget I had paying for pre-employment requirements - paid for copies of my transcript of records, SSS, Pag-ibig, Philhealth membership, TIN, police and NBI clearance, résumé with photo, etc. I didn't have money left for a simple dress, nor a simple makeup, not even 650pesos for my own sablay. I cried. I cried in deep sadness. I had been looking forward to my graduation day but I could not afford to attend nor celebrate it.

At least I had my TOR to submit to my employer; I had my graduation picture taken wearing the toga; I have a diploma; I had a successful final job interview; I got a job, only months after the 911 attack. I received tuition and other subsidies in my entire UP stay. I was still very lucky. God heard my heart's wishes and gave me that rainbow of hope.

The sablay that I never got to wear on my shoulders now gives a signature look to my cakes. Special thanks to Camille Delfin for her design idea. Every time a sablay cake leaves my kitchen, at least one student's life is uplifted. And I thank you for helping me fulfill my promise to pay forward thru cash donations and school-related support to selected student recipients. I hope that even in simple, small ways I am able to make struggling students feel that God is sending them love 💕

Did you know?

My daughter Denise freaked out when the crew at Shakey's surprised her with a cake on her 3rd birthday? She quickly hid under the table as soon as she saw the candle! Her heartbeat was too fast, she screamed and cried and panicked. That's when I found out that she had a trauma with flames and fireworks and lights other than bulbs. Just imagine, my child hated going to cake shops, didn't even want her own birthday cake 😔

After several attempts of presenting a cake (without a candle pa ha), I realized that the only way she'll want it is if I make it in her favorite character. I began learning how to bake (thanks to Joy of Baking Stephanie Jaworski, and Way Beyond Cakes by Mayen, my YT mentors in baking and decorating). Months before her birthday, I kept telling her that on her birthday I'll make her a cake and will put a candle on it and that she will make a wish. Thank God it worked! She no longer felt fearful, rather she felt so excited every birthday for her cake! 🥰
