October 15 is International Rural Womenโs Day.
Today, we recognize the hard work of peasant women farmers throughout the country and all over the world. Their labor moves mountains for sustainable landcare, food security, and climate resilience. On top of these, they also power through the unpaid domestic work of raising their children and taking care of their families.
Yet their struggle is multi-dimensional. Women farmers do not get equal pay for the same amount of work as their male counterparts. Their wages are also too low to maintain a good quality of life for their families.
And since they donโt own the land that they till, they have to abide by the unjust demands of landlords when it comes to rent and harvest. Because of these, they remain as the poorest and hungriest people in our country.
Life doesnโt get any easier for peasant women farmers as state forces continue to harass them while heavy militarization persists in the countryside.
So today, we also amplify the calls to defend peasant women, grant land to the tillers, and demand justice for all the oppression they experience.
