STATEMENT OF THE LIBERAL PARTY
ON THE CONTINUED INCARCERATION OF SEN. LEILA DE LIMA
[28 October 2020]
The Liberal Party of the Philippines reiterates the Senate Minority Bloc’s call for Sen. Leila de Lima’s immediate release following testimonies from the AMLC and the PDEA, whose investigations absolved her of any involvement in the illegal drug trade within New Bilibid Prison.
Leila, bawat panawagang palayain siya ay sinagot ng pagdadahilan: “Rule of law”, o di kaya “let the law take its course”. But the law has been "taking its course”. If the rule of law is to truly prevail, then Sen. Leila must be freed. The prosecution’s constant attempts at delaying the process and fabricating evidence that do not hold up to any sort of scrutiny, points to her innocence as it did the first time these charges were filed against her.
We continue to draw strength from her courage and persistence in disrupting the consensus of silence. Prolonging this case against her has not worn her down nor weakened her resolve; it only serves to show the people the lengths that oppressors will go in silencing its critics. If the court is to do its job right, if it is to let justice truly prevail, then its only remaining task is to clear her name and set her free.
