VISAYAS, MINDANAO POWER SPOT PRICES NEAR P20/KWH

Electricity spot prices in the Visayas surged by 64.9% in August, reaching P18.59 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) from P11.29 per kWh in the previous month.

Mindanao saw an even sharper increase, with prices jumping 88.2% to P19.56 per kWh from P10.39 per kWh.

Luzon, meanwhile, bucked the trend, with spot prices falling 34.2% to P4.80 per kWh from P7.30 per kWh.

The steep increases in the Visayas and Mindanao were attributed to tighter power supply amid higher electricity demand.

The latest spot market prices are expected to be reflected in consumers’ power bills this month. | via Brix Lelis

VISAYAS, MINDANAO GRIDS UNDER RED ALERT FOR 9 HOURS

A red alert will be raised in both the Visayas and Mindanao power grids for nine hours today, September 3, 2026, due to the continued shutdown of major coal plants.

The alert, which could trigger rotating brownouts, will be in effect from 1 PM to 10 PM in the Visayas and from 12 PM to 9 PM in Mindanao. | via Brix Lelis

�Factor/s that contributed to the YELLOW Alert declaration: �
1. Unavailability of Mindanao's large coal plants GNPK 1 & 2 and TSI 2.

A red alert status is issued when power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand and the transmission grid’s regulating requirement.
�A yellow alert is issued when the operating margin is insufficient to meet the transmission grid’s contingency requirement.

NEWS UPDATE: As of 1:30 PM, the Visayas Grid will be placed under Extended Red Alert Status from 3 PM to 8 PM, followed by Yellow Alert Status from 8 PM to 10 PM today, August 11, 2026.

Meanwhile, the Mindanao Grid is under Yellow Alert Status from 10 AM to 8 PM.
