Did you know your favorite go to Hadouken snack has been around longer than you think?

The earliest version of onigiri dates back over 2,000 years. Archaeologists in Ishikawa Prefecture discovered carbonized lumps of rice dating to the Yayoi period. These ancient rice balls were tightly compressed and baked, making them highly durable portable meals for early farmers and travelers.

The name oyakodon (親子丼) literally means "parent-and-child rice bowl," referring to the chicken (parent) and egg (child) being cooked together!

According to Tamahide (a restaurant in Nihonbashi, Tokyo) lore, regular customers would often take the leftover savory hot pot broth (warish*ta), mix it with chicken bits and beaten egg, and pour it over their rice bowls at the very end of the meal. This improvised combination was called oyako-ni (parent-and-child stew)

In 1891, Toku, the wife of Tamahide's fifth-generation owner, noticed how much customers loved doing this. She decided to streamline the concept into a single, dedicated, easy-to-eat rice bowl.
