In 2011, Ishmael Bernal's biographer and bestie Jorge Arago died and left behind to Angela Stuart Santiago the project of Pro Bernal, Anti Bio (2018). This project came with Bernal ephemera—documents, a diary, transcribed conversations between Bernal and Arago, among many other things—which Stuart-Santiago fashioned into the book. What we found much later, after we had co-published Pro Bernal, Anti Bio with ABSCBN Publishing was the photo collection of Bernal, or the remains of it, which had been handed to Arago, and which had survived some floods and a fire.
This is this Guerrilla Archive, The Ishmael Bernal Photo Collection, to be shown for the first time (and maybe last time) publicly. Exhibition runs from June 24 to July 20 2025 at . On June 27, Friday, we gather to celebrate the two qu**rs who keep this photo collection—a history of PH cinema, really—alive.
Exhibition layout by Katrina Stuart Santiago and Gio Potes .
Title inspired by Jorge Arago's "The Passive Rebel", 1970.
