While on my way home from work last Saturday, one of my favorite songs from Legacy Five suddenly played and the lyrics hit differently this time.
It said:
"And though I've had my share of hard times
I wouldn't change them if I could
'Cause through it all, God's been good." ๐ถ
It's been 10 months since I became a single dad, but even before that, I had already experienced so much loss.
I lost my dad in 2024. I lost friends. I lost my church community. I lost important files that affected my work and business. I lost parts of myself while struggling with my mental health. And eventually, I lost my wife and the family I had spent years working so hard to build.
Looking back, it sometimes feels like it was one wave of grief after another. There were so many moments when I just couldn't believe what was happening.
But there's something I almost forgot. Before all of this happened, one of my prayers had always been:
"God, make me the person You want me to be."
Now I realize, hindi ko yata naintindihan kung ano yung hiningi ko. ๐
Because becoming the person God wanted me to be didn't happen through comfort.
It happened through surrender, through loss, through being stripped of things I thought defined me, and through having to start over.
It happened when I had to learn that there are things I can lose and still be okay as long as I don't lose God.
And I think that's why another song has been speaking to me lately. I love this thought from Tauren Wells' What a Miracle Feels Like:
"The most beautiful stories come from all the broken times."
Maybe that's what God has been doing with my story.
Not wasting the broken pieces. Not erasing the pain. But taking the very things I thought would destroy me and somehow using them to build something beautiful.
And honestly, I wouldn't change it.
Not because I enjoyed the pain because I didn't. ๐ Not because I would choose loss if I had a choice because I wouldn't.
But because I know God more deeply now.
And if I had to walk through all of it again just to find God the way I have found Him in this season, I would.
Because He is worth it. ๐ฅน
Romans 5:3โ4 says:
"Suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope."
Maybe that's what I couldn't see while I was in the middle of it. The suffering wasn't the end of the story.
So if you're reading this while you're in your own dark season, I want you to know something:
Your story isn't over.
You may not understand what God is doing right now. You may be grieving something you never thought you'd have to grieve. You may be looking at your life and wondering how anything beautiful could possibly come from all of this.
I understand. But please don't assume that because your story is broken, God is finished with it.
Some of the most beautiful stories are written in the seasons that hurt the most.
So don't lose your "hallelujah" in the middle of your hardship.
Keep trusting Him. Keep walking with Him. Keep surrendering.
Because one day, you may look back at the season you thought was breaking you and realize that God was building your testimony there.
Through it all, Godโs been good. ๐โ๏ธ
