Happy Women's Month! 💜

In this celebration of women's month, Sugar Pouch would like to give recognition to Fannie Farmer who was the first woman who published a recipe for brownies. 👵🏻

In 1896, her creation was different from the modern brownie as it had no chocolate and wasn’t cut into bars. But the texture was brownie-like, and she followed it up a decade later with a recipe more like the brownie as we know it today.

Here is Farmer’s 1896 recipe, from The Boston Cooking-School Cook Book: 📖

⅓ cup butter. 🧈
⅓ cup powdered sugar.
⅓ cup Porto Rico molasses.
1 egg well beaten. 🥚
⅞ cup bread flour.
1 cup pecan meat cut into pieces.

Mix ingredients in the order given. Bake in small, shallow fancy cake tins, garnishing the top of each cake with one-half pecan. 🧱
