Kapeng Barako means strong tasting coffee. It is a common name for coffee from Batangas Province.

It is a variety of Liberica Coffee brought by the Spaniards, and was planted and cultivated in Lipa City, Batangas. The high altitude of Lipa and good growing conditions made the distinct quality of coffee beans.

During the Spanish era, Lipa is the country's top producer of coffee that made the Philippines one of the largest coffee producing nation. Today, this variety is also widely cultivated in Cavite Province.
