How old is LUGAW?

Interesting read, credits to the owner, we got this information from Google and different online sources that LUGAW is at least 413 years old in written Philippine history, with its first recorded documentation dating back to 1613.

Historical Roots

First Record: The National Commission for Culture and the Arts notes that lugaw appeared in the Vocabulario de la lengua Tagala written by Franciscan missionary Fr. Pedro de San Buenaventura in 1613.

Definition: The 1613 dictionary defined logao (lugaw) as a rice porridge made by mixing rice with water, milk, or both.

Origins: Historians believe the concept came to the Philippines even earlier through trade and migration with early Chinese settlers who shared their staple congee, though locals quickly adapted it using native ingredients.

Evolution Over Time

Pre-Colonial Beginnings: Long before Spanish colonization, early Filipinos cooked basic rice gruel as an accessible, easily digestible meal.

Regional Variations: Over the centuries, Filipinos created distinct local twists like arroz caldo (infused with ginger and chicken) and goto (with beef tripe).
