There are places you don’t realize are special while you’re still living around them.

You pass the same trees, walk the same paths, sit on the same benches, and barely think twice about it. Then years go by, and you find yourself looking at an old photo, remembering a version of yourself who had no idea how quickly those ordinary days would become memories.

The campus may look almost the same when you return. But you won’t be.

Maybe that’s why we take pictures. Not because every moment is extraordinary, but because someday, the ordinary places will be the ones we miss the most.

And when you see them again, you’ll remember where you were, who you were with, and who you used to be.

And most of the time, you only realize it was the last time long after it already happened.

The last coffee after class.
The last meal before heading home.
The last drink under warm streetlights that somehow turned into hours of stories and laughter.

Back then, we thought there would always be another one.
Another tambay.
Another “kita tayo sa usual.”
Another night in Elbi with the same people around the same table, wrapped in the cool evening air.

Then life quietly happens.
People graduate.
Schedules shift.
Some leave Elbi, while others simply become harder to meet.

So when someone asks,
“Coffee tayo?”
“Kain muna?”
“Isang drink?”
Stay a little longer.

Because someday, you’ll look back and realize that ordinary night was the last time you were all together like that.

And you didn’t even know it then. We thought we were just hanging out, never realizing we were making the memories we’d spend years wishing we could walk back into.

The Sablay is what people see.

The graduation photos. The smiles. The congratulations. The thank yous to the people who helped you get there.

What they do not see are the sleepless nights before exams, the early mornings and long commutes, the late-night coffee stops just to finish one more reading, the org meetings, group works, presentations, deadlines, and all the things you had to juggle outside the classroom.

They do not see the part-time jobs and side hustles. The meals you had to stretch. The times you chose between sleep and finishing a requirement. The friends who shared notes, reviewers, coffee, and a table to study at. The parents who worked, worried, sacrificed, and quietly carried part of the weight with you.

They do not see the days you questioned if you were good enough. The subjects you struggled to pass. The papers you rewrote. The exams you walked into exhausted. The small victories that nobody photographed.

Then one day, you are wearing the Sablay.

It may look like one photo, one ceremony, one degree. But behind that photo are countless ordinary days when you simply kept going.

So celebrate the small wins too. The passed exam. The finished paper. The completed semester. The requirement submitted at 11:59 PM. The first time you finally understood something that once made no sense. Every little step counts.

Because getting a degree is more than making it to graduation. It takes hard work, sacrifice, support, and a love for learning. It takes showing up, one day at a time.

And someday, all those small wins become one big one.

The Sablay.

The Kids Will Be Alright

There is a very specific kind of magic that lives on the damp grass of Freedom Park, especially when midterms, blue books, recitations, and deadlines start piling up.

On paper, it was completely absurd. Dozens of students gathered in front of D.L. Umali Hall, arms stretched behind them, waiting to sprint across the lawn. An inflatable T-rex stood nearby, hundreds of people cheered, and for one afternoon, the whole campus seemed to forget about everything else.

It was fun. It was also exactly what everyone needed.

Behind the viral livestreams, photos, and memes was a simple collective exhale. For a little while, nobody cared about grades or tomorrow’s recitation. We were just students being young, tired, and willing to make a spectacle of ourselves because it was fun.

Years later, what stays is the feeling of being young together. The friends beside you, the rain, the muddy grass, and the freedom to be completely ridiculous for an afternoon.

Maybe that is what these moments were really for. Not to escape campus life, but to remind us that even in the middle of everything we had to carry, there was still room to laugh, gather, and make something worth remembering.

And as long as every new generation finds its own way to do that, the kids will be alright.
