Celebrating Freedom at Poetika: A Night of Words and Rhythm ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ญโœจ

Last June 12, as the nation commemorated Independence Day, Kafe Arka by Brews and Cons became a sanctuary for the soul, hosting a special edition of Poetika by Kapestorya. The evening was a beautiful tapestry of spoken word and music, centered on the profound theme of Philippine Independence and the personal resonance of what it means to be "free."

The atmosphere was electric as our featured readers took the stage, each weaving narratives of resilience, history, and liberation:

The stage was also graced by the musical performances of Fueled by Brews and Archo, whose sounds perfectly complemented the poetic weight of the night. Following the features, the floor opened up for an open mic and jam session, where raw, unfiltered artistry flowed freely. The excitement reached a peak with an intense improv poetry slam, showcasing the spontaneous brilliance of our community.

One of the most poignant highlights of the evening came from Robin Yankin, who composed this piece on the spot during the improv session:

"On this fine evening,
we celebrate your hard-won
congratulations,
another chapter of strength
proven, another moment
of delicious freedom,
for things have come to pass โ€“
certain things
that should not have
happened in the first place.
You survived the withdrawal
of a love gone unrequited,
the hit parade of tears,
the moments of oblivion,
and all the rest that one too embarrassing
to mention.
On this fine evening,
be proud
for you are,
once again,
independent,
once again
too ambitious to die."

We are incredibly grateful for the presence of the Dakila Iloilo members, the talented poets from Ambahan, and our ever-supportive Brews fam. It was a night of shared history, healing, and the relentless pursuit of expression.

When we are urged to amplify our calls through music, we come collectively not just to enjoy and appreciate the talents of our Ilonggo Artists but to let ourselves be situated in the mission of building a nation of heroes toward genuine social change.

The Closing Program of the Active Vista Human Rights Festival- Iloilo Satellite with the theme โ€œPinalagpatโ€ sentences us to the reality and current situation in Iloilo, and encourages us in the middle of a situation wherein everything seems like pinalagpatan, and we stand to organize it.

As we closed the AVHRF 2024 last October 06, 2024, at Brews and Cons, it will be a testament that the Ilonggo music is thriving, in small or big spaces.
