POLLUTING A HISTORICAL SITE*

Question: Where does a mining firm find water for their silting ponds at the top of a mountain?
Answer: Quite easy. Look for a watershed area that is the source of water for rivers, creeks, and streams.

In the case of eastern Homonhon, a mining firm located their silting ponds right on the watershed area that provides water to the “two springs there of the clearest water” that Pigafetta documented in 1521, and which led to the recorded second name of the island, “Acquada de li buoni Segnialli” (Watering-Place of Good Signs) for the island.

In the Google Earth Map here, the boxed portion shows the paths of the two Pigafetta springs from their watershed source around the present silting ponds of a mining firm, through which mine tailings are also “accidentally” flooded down to the ocean during monsoon seasons. The circled portion is the Magellan Shrine area where the Homonhon episode of the Magellan-Elcano expedition in 1521 is commemorated every year.
