It has become comforting how the voices we once thought of as new are now considered familiar — and how the old voices end up sounding new again.

This year is Tala's second. To mark it, we wanted to return to our roots — inviting some of the poets and artists who move in the same circles as our matriarch, letting them experience a space they once knew, now lived in by a newer generation.

To be honest, we did not plan to focus on building a community when we started. But when you spend enough time with the people who find their way to you, it becomes inevitable. We met inspired and talented people, and that’s what made the difference.

Tala is no longer just a space that inspires those who need it. It grows with the people who inspire it.

Our barista Zyl takes a rest from his barista duties as he sets up the sound stuff at Tala's first Poetry Potluck and Anniversary Night. In the afterparty, he picks up the mic to jam out on one of the songs he made called 'Peachy.' Always been a songwriter, he sometimes makes or works on his own songs while waiting for customers at the cafe.
