🍙 Spam Musubi: A Hawaiian Icon in a Seaweed Wrap
What It Is:
Spam musubi is a beloved Hawaiian snack that combines a slice of grilled Spam with a block of sticky rice, all wrapped together with a strip of nori (seaweed). Think of it as a sushi-adjacent handheld treat—portable, savory, and deeply rooted in local culture.

📜 History & Origins: Spam musubi emerged in Hawaii during and after World War II, when Spam became a staple due to its long shelf life and availability through U.S. military rations. Locals creatively incorporated it into their cuisine, blending Japanese onigiri traditions with American ingredients.

Two women are often credited with popularizing the dish:
Barbara Funamura of Kauai, who sold Spam musubi at the Joni-Hana restaurant in the 1980s.

Mitsuko Kaneshiro, who sold hundreds daily from her Honolulu shop, Michan’s Musubi.

Today, Spam musubi is a cultural staple in Hawaii, found in convenience stores, lunch counters, and even celebrated with its own holiday—National Spam Musubi Day on August 8th.

It’s a snack that tells a story—of resilience, fusion, and flavor.
