MAYOR GARCIA LEADS

In a recent independent poll conducted by the University of San Carlos (USC), incumbent Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia seems to be walking into the upcoming midterm elections with a solid lead in the five-cornered Cebu City mayoral race. The survey, aptly dubbed the “Voters’ Preference and Perspectives Survey for Cebu City,” has stirred quite a buzz since its release on May 5, 2025, just a week ahead of the big day.

So, what’s the scoop here? According to the USC survey, Garcia is not just holding his own but is reportedly the frontrunner in both the North and South Districts of Cebu City. This news might come as a surprise to some, especially given the fierce competition he faces from four other candidates vying for the top spot. But let’s be real: Garcia's popularity seems to be holding strong among the electorate.

In these politically charged environments, especially when elections are around the corner, voters' sentiments can shift almost overnight. However, the poll results indicate a steady backing for Garcia, suggesting that he has managed to capture the public’s trust—or at least enough of it—during his tenure. This trust might stem from various factors: his administration’s initiatives, community engagement, or simply the effectiveness of his leadership in addressing the city’s burning issues.

USC’s polling methodology, carried out by the Department of Political Science, offers a vital glimpse into the minds of Cebu City voters. It’s noteworthy that the polling was conducted independently, hinting at its credibility. This survey is a part of USC's Centre for Governance, Leadership, and Development, showcasing the university's commitment to fostering democratic processes and informed citizen engagement, especially in local governance.

As the countdown to the elections continues, it’ll be interesting to see how these figures will influence campaign strategies. Will Garcia's opponents ramp up their efforts to close the gap? Or will they focus on shaking voters’ perceptions of the incumbent? Voter turnout, sentiment shifts, and strategic campaigning will play crucial roles in determining whether Garcia can maintain this lead or if a dark horse will emerge in the final days leading up to the polls.

In any case, it’s safe to say that the political landscape in Cebu City is poised for an exciting showdown. With Garcia’s lead, coupled with the impending elections, all eyes will be on these candidates in the coming days, making it a thrilling time for local politics.

**HAPPENING NOW IN HONG KONG: Access to Justice for the Filipino Community **

Today, the streets of Hong Kong are alive with activity and purpose as the Philippine Consulate General (PCG) hosts an important event aimed at empowering the Filipino community through legal education and assistance. Under the banner "Juana Knows: Idulog Mo Kay Atorni - Access to Justice International Legal Aid," this initiative is part of the larger 18-Day Campaign for Eliminating Violence Against Women (VAW), which runs from November 25 to December 12. While many are aware of the vibrant culture and economic dynamism of Hong Kong, it’s crucial to remember that the Filipino community here often faces unique challenges, especially when it comes to legal matters.

From 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., the PCG’s conference room will serve as a hub for discussions and consultations, offering free legal advice with the collaboration of the IBP Cebu City Chapter and the Cebu Lady Lawyers Association Inc. (CELLA). This event isn’t just about legal jargon or complicated processes; it's about real people seeking clarity, support, and safety in their lives. Many Filipinos in Hong Kong are domestic workers, and the complexities of their employment contracts and residency issues can often be overwhelming. With the increasing awareness of issues related to violence against women and other legal challenges, this initiative becomes even more vital.

By providing a space for free legal consultation, the PCG is doing more than just offering assistance; they are fostering a sense of community and solidarity. It’s about coming together to share knowledge, understanding, and resources. Participants get to learn about their rights and the available legal avenues if they ever find themselves in situations of distress or discrimination. Empowerment through knowledge is one of the key pillars of this initiative, reminding everyone that they are not alone and that there are people and organizations ready to help them.

As we commemorate the 18-Day Campaign for Eliminating Violence Against Women, it is essential to recognize that the fight against such violence is a collective responsibility. Initiatives like "Juana Knows" highlight the importance of community action in addressing these pressing issues. By equipping our Filipino community in Hong Kong with legal resources, we are laying the groundwork for a safer and more just environment.

So if you're in the area today, swing by the PCG! Whether you're seeking advice or simply curious, this event promises to be a valuable opportunity for everyone involved. Together, we can create a stronger, more informed community ready to advocate for its rights.

FORMER CITY ADMIN COLLIN NABBED FOR USURPATION

On a seemingly routine Friday morning, the air around Cebu City Hall buzzed with tension as former City Administrator Collin Rosell made quite the spectacle of himself. Arriving on November 8, 2024, he seemingly thought he was staging his grand comeback—only to find the day took a turn for the outrageous. Just hours after arriving to assert his position and welcome back the dismissed mayor, Michael Rama, Rosell found himself handcuffed, escorted, and dragged away by the authorities. Talk about an unexpected plot twist!

Let’s backtrack a bit. Rosell, along with Rama and several others, had been dismissed from their posts back in May when they were hit with a six-month preventive suspension handed down by the Office of the Ombudsman. But once that suspension ended on November 6, Rosell felt it was game on. Channeling his inner rock star, he strutted into City Hall, determined to reclaim what he thought was his rightful throne. Before he knew it, he was holding a press conference in the mayor’s office, preparing for an assertive comeback, if not a full takeover.

But it seems Rosell miscalculated quite a bit. The Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) had a different script in mind. Led by Col. Antonietto Cañete, they were not about to let Rosell’s triumphant return turn into a challenge of authority. Just when it looked like he was gearing up to take the reins again, the officers swooped in and arrested him for usurpation of authority. Did he really believe he could just waltz back into power like nothing had happened? The audacity!

As Rosell was led away in handcuffs, the scene reflected a deeper narrative unfolding in Cebu City. It’s a classic tale of politics—not just personal ambition but also the larger dynamics at play between authority, legitimacy, and the complexities of public office. When you take a step back and look at the broader picture, this episode illustrates how fragile power can be and the lengths to which individuals will go to reclaim it.

For now, it’s a cautionary tale for anyone thinking about stepping into the political arena: be ready for a reality check. The Cebu City Hall drama didn’t just score some headlines; it highlighted that the struggle for power often comes with unexpected consequences. Who knows what’s next in this ongoing saga, but one thing is for sure—Cebu City Hall is not a stage for the faint-hearted.

INSTEAD TO THE PRISON CELL DONALD TRUMP HEADING TO THE OVAL OFFICE

Donald Trump's victory as the nation's first convicted-criminal-turned-president-elect is nothing short of astonishing. As the nation finds itself in uncharted territory, it seems that the upcoming sentencing hearing on November 26 for his hush money case is unlikely to take place. Legal experts believe that any reasonable judge wouldn’t impose a sentence on a sitting president, no matter how unusual the circumstances might be.

We have to think about it: forcing Trump to a state courtroom during his transition into the White House could create chaos. His lawyers will likely argue that he’s too busy with presidential duties to attend, raising the question of whether anyone would really want to disrupt the orderly transfer of power. After all, the last thing we need is a circus during a presidential transition.

Trump was found guilty of 34 counts of falsifying business records, with a maximum penalty of four years. But those prison bars seem light-years away now. Instead of a prison cell, the Oval Office is calling. It's a wild, unprecedented situation that challenges our legal and political norms, making many wonder how this reality will shape the future of American politics. Buckle up; we've got a front-row seat to history!

TRUMP STUNNING COMEBACK

By: Atty. Gerry Carillo

On a Wednesday that shook the political foundations of the United States and reverberated across the globe, Donald Trump made a stunning comeback, defeating Kamala Harris in an election that nobody quite expected. Harris, who had repeatedly called Trump a danger to democracy, not only accepted defeat with grace but even rang Trump to congratulate him before delivering what was likely a bittersweet concession speech.

The political stakes had never felt higher, and as the dust settled, it became clear that the American electorate had prioritized the economy and inflation—issues that were left simmering during Joe Biden’s presidency. With rising prices biting into wallets, it seems like voters opted for the devil they knew, believing Trump could work his “economic magic” once more. And boy, did Wall Street respond! Stock prices soared, and the dollar gained strength as investors expressed optimism that Trump’s return could mean aggressive measures to stimulate growth.

At 78, Trump is set to take the oath of office for a second time on January 20, officially becoming the oldest person to assume the presidency. But age was clearly not a deterrent for his fervent supporters, who greeted him in Florida with chants of “USA!” echoing off the walls like a nostalgic anthem of American greatness. “It’s a political victory that our country has never seen before,” he declared, framing his return as a monumental win for all those who believe in the country’s potential to reignite its former glory.

In the wake of this election, the American political landscape has transformed radically. Trump’s victory is not just a personal comeback; it signals a resurgence of his political ideology that focuses heavily on economic issues, and it may well push the Democratic Party to rethink its strategies, especially surrounding voter concerns. With many Americans still feeling the pinch of inflation, Harris’s promises of progressive reforms may have fallen short in the face of dire economic realities.

For the world, Trump’s return could mean a shift in foreign policy, economic alliances, and global governance. Leaders worldwide are likely scanning their own policies, trying to gauge how this new-old president will affect international relations. All eyes will be on this new chapter of America’s journey as Trump embarks on his second term. Will he deliver on “making America great again” or will the challenges be greater than even he anticipates? Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure: we’re in for quite a ride.
