The world's most debated pizza topping has nothing to do with Hawaii. In fact, it's not even American. 🍍
It all started in 1962, when a Greek immigrant named Sam Panopoulos was running the Satellite Restaurant in Chatham, Ontario, Canada.
Looking to try something new, Panopoulos was inspired by the sweet and sour flavors he enjoyed in Chinese-Canadian cuisine.
He decided to throw some canned pineapple on a pizza with ham, just to see what would happen.
Where did the name come from? Not the island, but the brand of canned pineapple he used, which was simply called "Hawaiian."
So you have a Greek man in Canada, inspired by Chinese food, putting a South American fruit on an Italian dish. 🍕
Funnily enough, this Canadian creation found its biggest fanbase on the other side of the world.
By 1999, Hawaiian pizza had become the single most popular pizza in Australia, accounting for about 15% of all pizza sales.
It remains a testament to how global food culture can be, born from simple curiosity in a small town diner.
