Addressing a crisis

We’re facing with an alarming problem of aging farmers. The average age of Filipino farmers is 60, according to the Department of Agriculture. Training our children and young people about organic agriculture, in a systematic manner, is very necessary now.

Our local efforts are part of the current international campaign called “Rooting for Children’s Rights,” spearheaded by the Catholic Children’s Movement in Austria (Jungschar) and Dreikönigsaktion (DKA) highlighting the inseparable links between child welfare, environmental protection, healthy and sustainable food productions and consumption, sustainable livelihoods and climate protection.

For the past two years, the Young Organic Farmers from Buayan, Mlang, Cotabato have consistently performed their weekly tasks in their 400-square meter Organic Vegetables Garden, which provides them and their family with a sufficient supply of healthy food and a weekly income of 1,500. And they’ve been doing this without losing the essence of being children: fun-loving, imaginative, creative, playful, and oftentimes noisy.

Initiatives like this one happening throughout the Philippines and across the globe brings a strong sense of hope that there’s a brighter future in agriculture, made more attainable with the presence of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Impressive Yield

Lovely organic farming couple Jose Ben “Insek” and Liza Travilla from Mlang, North Cotabato are so proud of attaining a 5.7-ton yield of superb eating-quality red rice harvested from their 0.9 hectare farm.

They have been planting PAS since 2011. PAS is a red rice variety which is also the acronym of its proud breeder, Pedrito A. Sannicolas (PAS), a farmer-leader from Buug, Zamboanga Sibugay and one of the pioneering rice breeders of www.agroecophilippines.org.

Over the years of continuing use and care, PAS has become more adapted to their local climatic condition, a very important trait that can’t be found in hybrid, conventional and GMO Seeds. This made the couple and the members of Buayan Sustainable Agriculture Farmer’s Organization (BUSAFO) firmed with their decision not to gamble the quality of the seeds that they’ve already have – and shared with other farmers – with the risks of Golden Rice http://agroecophilippines.org/keeping-our-rice-gmo-free/.

The price per kilo of fresh palay in Mlang has dropped to 13.00, leaving most rice farmers in a very disadvantage situation with the traders and middlemen preying on them, and the government is doing very little to address this. But Insek, Liza and the members of BUSAFO and those hundreds of organic farmers who are selling their produce directly to the consumers at fair price are now being protected from unfair and exploitative practices that exists for decades already, resulting to higher incidence of poverty in the farming communities.

COVID-19 brings out more creativity in this organic farming family, providing them with 30,000 additional monthly income.

It was only last June when Numeriano “Numen” Gabutero, 65, wife Precila, 64, and their children thought of having additional things to do while living under ECQ. Their creative minds and positive attitudes led them to utilize a small portion of their 2-hectare organic farm as a good source of pottery-making after discovering that the soil in it is best suited for pottery and ceramics. They’ve wasted no time and concretized what they had in minds, recognizing that it needs no significant amount of financial input.

Now, their flourishing family-owned pottery-making business which started last fourth week of June not only provides them with a gross monthly income of 30,000 but also offers a promising additional means of living for their children and grandchildren.

In this time when almost everyone is hooked to ‘flower mania,’ Gabutero family can provide us with a sustainable pots/containers for our plants, believing that we’re more conscious that plastics, although lighter and quite cheaper, generates more wastes and aren’t good for the environment.

You are welcome to visit his diversified farm (click this link http://agroecophilippines.org/diversified-integrated-organic-farm-of-gabutero-family/ to see how it looks) and improvised pottery factory in Barangay New Sibunga, Kiblawan, Davao Del Sur. Commitment of the Organic Agri-Frontliners to the Public

We’ve already delivered a total of 294 sacks (and remitted a significant sales to the farmers) of good-eating quality, nutritious and very affordable organic black, red and white rice directly from the farmers to your houses and offices since the lockdown period started. We can’t mention you all, and tagging some of you with this post is not enough. We can sincerely say: Thank you for the trust and support!

We commit to continue our door-to-door delivery service even if the lockdown and travel restrictions will be lifted. We further commit to maintain a low price so that organic products will always be affordable and accessible to everyone, not only for the upper middle class and the elite. And few months from now, another variants will be added to our products, with the commitment to continue improving our services, packaging, and standards https://directory.ifoam.bio/affiliates/5441-agro-eco-philippines-inc.

Buying organic product increases the regular income of the small-scale organic farmers, the beneficiaries of this project http://agroecophilippines.org/the-social-benefits-of-consuming-organic-rice/. It also increases the no. of small-scale farming families practicing agroecology https://fastenopfer.ch/recht-auf-nahrung/agraroekologie/ and the land areas devoted to it to meet the demand of the increasing no. of consumers like you and, in a broadest sense, to significantly reduce the incidence of poverty and hunger in the farming communities by 2030 https://www.dka.at/sdgs. We are one with this goal.

We’d like to thank our partner CSOs, schools, advocacy groups, Fastenopfer, DKA Austria, Miva Switzerland and Miva Austria for their full support to this project.

The oppositions to Golden Rice are getting stronger and wider

The men, women, children, and farming families in Agro-Eco Philippines are one with the Filipino people in opposing the commercialization of Golden Rice, asserting that such move of the regulatory bodies is full of irrationalities after we’ve all seen how conventional agriculture model, upon which the philosophy behind Golden Rice and GMOs is built, has systematically failed over the years and especially now in the time of COVID-19 pandemic.

Instead of allowing the commercialization of Golden Rice which is practically useless with the availability of the hundreds of resilient, locally-adapted, high-yielding and good-eating quality rice varieties that organic farmers have already been using and sharing for decades; the government, if it truly cares for the people, must support agroecology for the undisputable fact that it is the only farming approach that is proven very effective in providing nutritious and sufficient food sources (a better way of addressing Vitamin A deficiency that the proponents of Golden Rice promised) and regular income to the millions of farming families, and stimulates the local economies throughout the COVID-19 period.

More and more countries are now moving away from the orbit of GMOs and embracing agroecology in their serious commitment to Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. But what the Philippine government is doing now, in the case of Golden Rice, is the opposite. And in this case, we vow to continue asserting our rights in many ways.

It brings great joy in our hearts seeing these Young Organic Farmers from North Cotabato doing weekly bayanihan (communal work) in their Organic Vegetables Garden in front of a community Chapel on a windy Sunday afternoon.

This father and daughter tandem were absolutely right when they said two months ago: “This COVID-19 crisis could last longer, but we’re prepared.”

Now, their story continue to gain international recognition and provides us with concrete solutions on how to effectively address the impacts of this pandemic.

Sharing the Seed of the Forbidden Rice

Almost three years ago, Uldarico “Fr. Jun” Galenzoga, our Coordinator in Davao Region gave 3 panicles of Korokan, a traditional variety of black rice which most of us never heard about before to Elmer Daplin, a farmer from Bansalan, Davao Del Sur who at that time was starting with organic farming. Out of curiosity and some doubts, he planted it in a few square meters of his 1 hectare farm. But his doubts turned into certainty and his curiosity into conviction when he saw the outcomes of his hard work, coupled with innovations and positive outlook.

A year after, Elmer shared few panicles to Nonoy Astronomo and his wife Luz, a farming couple from Maco, Davao De Oro who wanted to untie themselves from conventional farming and to engage with organic farming more seriously – planting the best adapted seed and asserting their rights on it, using appropriate technologies, nurturing our common values, and following the sustainable development approach Agro-Eco Philippines, SEARICE, and numerous national and international development organizations have been espousing for years.

You can read the Ecumenical Campaign 2020 of FASTENOPFER and Bread For All by clicking this link: https://sehen-und-handeln.ch/saatgut/.

At present, Nonoy, Elmer, Rene, Nonito, Arthur, Insek and Nida are providing the increasing no. of organic food enthusiasts and sustainable development advocates in Davao City and Davao Region with fresh, quality, and most importantly, affordable black rice. Thanks to the organizations and families who continue to patronize the produce of these farmers.

Black Rice was forbidden to the common people in ancient China due to its high medicinal and nutritional properties, making it exclusive only to the Emperor. But now it is the staple food of many low and middle income families. Many thanks to the farmers!

Seeds of Hope

These organic farmers from Davao Region and their counterparts at ARC, Bukidnon and Zamboanga Del Sur have done bold and inspiring actions by mobilizing their fellow farmers, even in a period of GCQ, to share their seeds to the farmers in Casiguran, Aurora who needs to start anew after Bagyong Ambo devastated much of their farms.

Our hearts are filled with joy to know that even in a time of great challenges brought about by COVID-19 crisis and the 2-month drought that effected most of Mindanao, these farmers are still able to gather a total of 100 kilos of corn seeds and 38 kilos of assorted vegetables seeds, which the farmers in Casiguran really needs now.

We’d like to thank Uldarico “Fr. Jun” Galenzoga and Gabriel Diaz, our Coordinator in Davao Region and Zamboanga Peninsula, respectively, for doing the necessary field coordination.

Activity like this is a way to strengthen farmer-to-farmer cooperation across regions beyond the agronomic aspect of organic agriculture and into the less understood social, economic and political dimensions of it.

Corporations have made billions by selling chemical-laden seeds to the farmers, thus making them fully dependent and always at the losing end. Agro-Eco Philippines and our partner organizations (https://sehen-und-handeln.ch/saatgut/) will continue to assert the rights of the farmers to seeds and the development they deserved.
