Kwelang Social Worker

Kwelang Social Worker

EDUARD AUNG COLOD KYU JR. or otherwise known as EDUARD LAURIENZ DIS-IW COLOD is a Social Worker, Social Entrepreneur, Social Justice and Human Rights Activist, and a Christian Advocate.

He is currently the Owner and Managing Director of Tagumpay Natin Bistro and the Founding Owner (with Co-Owners), President, and Chief Executive Officer of Makabayan Café.

Both Makabayan Café and Tagumpay Natin Bistro are startup social enterprises as Advocacy Businesses and Christian Business Ministries.

As advocacy businesses, Makabayan Café, as a “Coffee Shop with a Cause” is geared towards promoting “local quality” as the new trend as opposed to “foreign and commercialized views on quality products and services” and the best way to describe this trend is by being simply being nationalistic or Makabayan with the branding: “Sariling Atin at Dekalidad, Makabayan!” This is best realized by the said Café through patronizing and appreciating local value chains and advancing their market potentials and its incorporation with Café Culture as a 3rd place (the place next to home and our occupations) and its adherence to the 3rd wave coffee movement (appreciating Coffee, the Barista, the Coffee Roaster, the Farmer, and the Place of Origin).

The said Café aims to be a Community Hub by promoting community-based products and services; a Social Change Hub by assisting, consolidating, and bridging community livelihoods as local quality to the mainstream market through the Makabayan Brand; and a Social Development Enterprise by being a venue for Purposeful Discussions, Social Action, and Spiritual Development.

On the other hand, Tagumpay Natin Bistro, as a “Bistro with a Cause” is geared towards promoting “local pride” by becoming a people’s brand rooted in the success of local value chains with the branding: “Sariling Atin, Tagumpay Natin!”– an advocacy that can be actualized through incorporating the patronization and appreciation of local value chains to Bistro Culture which is a way of life between and among socio-economic lines with CEOs and Blue Collar Workers can eat together, elbow to elbow. The said Bistro aims to be a center of convergence for the local art of living and the local means of living in collaboration with Makabayan Café.

Sir Eduard as the one who envisioned the above establishments believes that Café Culture and Bistro Culture is one of the best points to realize his advocacies which are all anchored in the tenets of the Social Work Profession such as Social Change, Social Development, Social Justice, Human Rights, People Empowerment, and Collective Responsibility.

Sir Eduard or “Sir Edz” as he is commonly called, has been refined in the Social Work Profession which later on inspired him to put up these businesses.

Even in his college days, he was a Student Leader holding the banner of Social Work at Saint Louis University by being the Reviver of the Prime Movers Society – the Departmental Organization of Social Work Students in A.Y. 2009 as a Freshman and became its President in 2010 as a Sophomore. He also held multiple positions in the Supreme Student Council and was also Chairperson of the League of Presidents in the School of Humanities of the said University which have brought high esteem to their Social Work Students those days.

He became a Registered Social Worker in 2014 and he became a Volunteer Documenter for some of PASWI’s Learning and Development Activities both for PASWI National and PASWI Baguio-Benguetwhile job searching and taking his Master in Development Management degree.

In 2015, he was hired as Social Welfare Officer II at DSWD- Central Office at its Crisis Intervention Unit and became a Team Leader after 3 months, later on promoted as Social Welfare Officer III after 6 months.

In 2016, after finishing his Master of Science in Public Management degree, he transferred to the Standards Bureau as a Project Development Officer III under the CSO Accreditation Division and performed the role of an Accreditation Assessor after 3 months, recognizing his intellect and skills, he was reassigned in the Standards Development Division where he became the lead and point person for the development of the CSO Accreditation Guidelines both Implementing and Beneficiary CSOs. It was in these times that he became the Chairperson of the DSWD Social Welfare Employees Association of the Philippines - Central Office Committee for the Welfare of Contract-of-Service/ Memorandum-of-Agreement and Job Order Workers.

In 2018, he was elected as the President of PASWI Quezon City Chapter, being the Youngest Accredited Professional Organization Chapter President in the Country, with the leadership brand: “Paninindigan at Malasakit” which form basis of his program line-up, however, this was put into hiatus when his residency was intermittently moved to Baguio City later that year. However, he remained vocal for the plight and concerns of Social Workers and acted on them on limited ways. In the same year, he became the Youngest Project Development Officer V/ Division Chief in DSWD when he handled the Support Program for Disaster Response under the Office of the Undersecretary for Disaster Response Management.

In 2019, he then decided to put up a social enterprise that would allow his advocacies to be further realized and through the help of his friends and colleagues, Makabayan Café was softly launched on June 12, 2019. In 2020, he established Tagumpay Natin Bistroto complement the former. Both shops now are struggling for survival but the cause of helping will never be hampered by anything, not even this pandemic and we are doing our best to endure, our Staff, our Team are doing the greatest risks, sacrifices, and efforts to keep operations running so we could fulfil our missions as social enterprises – not for the profit but for its advocacies and this passion of service and desire for betterment has always been expected to be in the heart of a Social Worker.

At the moment, Sir Edz is looking forward to return to the profession so he could help and do the best of what he can do – being a Social Worker, as the call of the times deem it to be.

MAKABAYAN CAFÉ

Makabayan Café is a social enterprise centered on its advocacy to patronize local goods and services as a way to empower Filipino Families and Communities that would later on be the backbone of National Development and Sustainable Growth.

Makabayan Café is one of the many social enterprises that its owners - a League of Social Entrepreneurs in Baguio City, have envisioned and is now establishing. It is established with the premise that all forms of development (holistic development) starts with a development that starts in the family and the community-level. Thus, in the lense of economic development, it must be based from local labor and industries. In short, it should be nationalist (Makabayan!) where we rely on our own production and services before considering its foreign counterparts.

Makabayan Café, as the pilot project for this venture, will begin by promoting products and services that are made through preferential option to local markets and direct purchases from local farms. Also, its menu will be named with a nationalistic significance in order to propagate and popularize a culture of self-reliance and subsidiarity in a nationalist perspective.
