Before José Rizal became the hero we know today, he was also a Filipino who enjoyed the simple comforts of home.

According to historian Ambeth Ocampo’s research, Rizal’s breakfast generally included rice and dried fish (tuyo), often paired with a cup of hot chocolate.

It’s a simple meal, but it gives us a glimpse into the everyday life of our national hero—and a reminder of the Filipino food traditions that have been passed down through generations.

This National Heroes Day, we remember not only the heroes who shaped our history, but also the traditions that continue to connect us to our past.
