The Story Behind Nena’s Beth ❤️🍗

Have you ever wondered why there are several “Nena’s” in Bacolod?

It all started with our beloved Antonena “Nanay Nena” Velez Bolonia, whose family became part of the rich history and tradition of Bacolod’s chicken inasal.

Through the years, her children and grandchildren continued that legacy through different family branches—each with their own story, recipes, and style of inasal.

One of those branches is Nena’s Beth Chicken Inasal. ❤️

Nena’s Beth was founded by the late Elizabeth “Beth” Baker, one of Antonena Velez’s daughters. Her love for family, food, and authentic Bacolod chicken inasal became the foundation of the legacy we proudly carry today.

The name “Nena’s Beth” is more than a name. It represents our family roots, our heritage, and the generations who came before us.

There are different Nena’s around Bacolod, each representing a different branch of the same family:

🌹 Nena’s Rose — own by Rosario tutor

🍗 Nena’s 1 — continued by another branch of the family, including Neneng and Totong.

🍗 Nena’s Dee Chicken Inasal — another family business owned by our cousin dee

❤️ Nena’s Beth Chicken Inasal — carrying the name and legacy of our late Elizabeth “Beth” Baker.

THE LOCATION OF THE ORIGINAL INASALAN SANG MANOK SA BACOLOD! 🔥

📍 Cuadra St., Bacolod City

Historical accounts identify the Velez family, including sisters Elisa Velez-Garrucho and Nena Velez, among the pioneering vendors who helped popularize inasal in the area. Their grilled chicken attracted customers because Cuadra Street was close to the plaza, cinema, and jeepney stops.

As the number of vendors and customers grew, the stalls were eventually relocated to the reclamation area, giving rise to what became known as Manokan Country. The move transformed a collection of roadside grills into one of Bacolod's most recognizable culinary destinations.
