I was reading about Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah. Most of us know them better as Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. I realized the Bible keeps using those Babylonian names. Names given to them by the very people who took them captive. Names meant to wipe out who they really were.
And I had to stop and ask: Why?
In the ancient world, a name wasn't just a label. It was a claim. It was like a brand on your soul. Their Hebrew names were beautiful prayers about God’s grace. But Babylon wanted to own them. So, the empire changed their names to honor foreign gods. It was a power move. It was an attempt to make them forget where they came from.
But that was where the meaning began to deepen.
The Bible doesn’t hide those "slave names." It keeps them right there on the page. Why? Because God is honest about our pain. He doesn’t pretend the "exile" didn’t happen. He doesn't pretend the world hasn't tried to relabel us. But here’s the best part: The world called them by those pagan names... But the fire didn't care.
When they were thrown into the furnace, they were still being called by those Babylonian labels. And yet, God met them right there. He didn't wait for them to get back to the Promised Land to save them. He didn't wait for them to have their "right" names back to use them.
It makes me think about Jesus. Jesus left the glory of heaven and came into our mess. He let people call Him names. They called Him a "nobody" from Nazareth. They labeled Him a criminal. He took on every ugly name the world has ever thrown at us. He wore our shame so we could wear His identity.
Think about the labels you’re carrying right now. Maybe you feel "unqualified." Maybe you feel like "a failure." Maybe life has renamed you "abandoned" or "not enough."
The story of Daniel shows us that the world can call us whatever it wants. But the world doesn't get the final say. Babylon could change their names, but it couldn't change their hearts. God is working in your life right now—even if you feel like you're in a "wrong name" season.
You don't have to be perfect to be His. You just have to remember who you belong to. Your real name is "Chosen." Your real name is "Loved."
