In our pursuit of Philippine-grown coffee, it has brought us to Rizal.
Did you know that Rizal Province is quietly brewing a vibrant local coffee scene? And it's more than just coffee shops.
When most people think of coffee in the Philippines, regions like Benguet, Sagada, Cavite Batangas or Bukidnon usually come to mind. But right in our backyard, towns like Jala-jala, Baras and Tanay are cultivating their own unique beans, proving that incredible coffee is closer than we think.
Take a look at what local producers are bringing to the table:
Jala-jala has smooth Robusta varieties with complex tasting notes like dark chocolate, brown sugar, vanilla and a surprising hint of guava. This variety isn't available in big volumes yet since there aren't a lot of coffee farms in the area yet.
Baras has local farms like Noah's Farm, that produce these Robusta beans offer a comforting, dessert-like profile featuring notes of butter cookies, dark choco, cinnamon and brown sugar.
Kape Bukel's own harvest, nestled in the higher elevations of Tanay(400–500 masl), it's an actual farm to cup experience that isn't as widely available especially in places that are very near the hustling and bustling cities of Metro Manila. They are producing fascinating Excelsa coffee processed using the honey method, yielding fruity and distinct notes of ripe mango, nuts, a hint of jackfruit and chocolate.
From different processing methods (Natural, Washed, and Honey) to unique high-elevation microclimates, Rizal's coffee farmers and roasters are putting the province on the specialty coffee map.
