In the past decade, we lost three dearest friends. Rico succumbed to stroke, JM to aneurysm, and Christine to heart attack. Rico was at the height of his career, JM was starting a family and just had his first baby, and Christine was embarking into a new, more carefree, creative life journey. They were all young. Death came like a thief of the night and took their lives and dreams away.
According to health statistics, cardiovascular diseases, cancers and diabetes remain to be the top causes of deaths in the Philippines. Medical research has shown that these deaths can be prevented with diet, exercise and lifestyle changes.
As food service providers, we asked ourselves, “How do we become part of the solution?”
To bridge people's growing awareness on the importance of diet, and our commitment to provide healthier food options, on Black Saturday in 2018, we opened Oh! Live Green (OLG) Restaurant.
If we could go back in time, what we would like to do is to sit down on a dinner meal with our friends Rico, JM and Christine. We'd tell them that for today let's skip the steak, the sisig and crispy pata. Why don't we order a vegetable burrito, a pesto pasta, an all-bean burger or a mushroom pizza? How about a non-dairy, superfood smoothie and those vegan cakes for desserts? There's plenty of delicious, healthy foods one can enjoy -- whether one’s cutting down on meat, a strict vegan, a casual vegetarian, a meat lover on a break or someone who has compassion for animals and the environment.
Sadly, It's too late for Rico, JM and Christine. But it is not yet late for everyone else. Not for us. So, if we take advantage of the healthier options available around us, on how we can protect our health, then perhaps all of us, friends and families, can live and enjoy each other a little bit longer.
