In 1940’s a barber shop was opened was opened called “Janis Hairdressing” by Anthonio Janis (who moved from Hartford, Connecticut, USA) he first lived in Sydney before moving to Wellington. The shop had 3 barbers chairs and a partitioned section for ladies (this was very unusual for the times) His son George took over the business when Antonio retired. The front part of the shop was also a tobacconists shop, where Antonios daughter worked. A shave cost 1 shilling and a haircut cost 1 shilling 6 pence.

Yesterday evening, Ombra was recognised as a 2026 Michelin Selected restaurant at the inaugural Michelin Awards in Auckland.

We are incredibly humbled and grateful to receive this recognition.

To our team, past and present, thank you. Your warmth, energy, care and consistency are what make Ombra what it is.

Thank you also to our suppliers, producers, wider team, friends, regulars and everyone who has supported Ombra along the way. Restaurants are never built alone, and we are very lucky to be surrounded by such generous people.

A huge congratulations to all the restaurants recognised yesterday evening, especially our fellow Wellington restaurants Jano, Logan Brown and Ortega, each receiving one Michelin star. It was a special night for Wellington, and a reminder of the strength, talent and generosity of this city’s hospitality community.

Congratulations also to Essence on an extraordinary two Michelin stars, and for helping put New Zealand cuisine firmly on the map.

A rising tide lifts all boats, and we are proud to celebrate this moment alongside so many brilliant restaurants and their teams across Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown.

After 13 years, our iconic Ombra sign is getting some major refurbishment. We had a great surprise during the process with discovering the original Liks St******se sign buried underneath it all.

To the worried onlookers who saw it come down, and those who have messaged since asking where it went - thanks for checking in. Give us 2-3 weeks, and it’ll be back hanging on the Cuba/Vivian corner for another decade or so to come.

We are open today from 12pm and have spaces available for bookings and walk-ins. We'd love to host you.
