We opened in December Friday the 13th in 1996 and decades later it is way different but still the same! We have evolved with dining trends, service styles, taken opportunities with new product and techie innovations and of course will continue to do so. What has never changed is the sharing with our guests our true passion for our craft, our community and our country. We want everyone to be as pr

oud as we are about New Zealand’s environment, the land and seas bounty, and the amazing people who harvest or produce from it. Working closely with these passionate producers inspires and excites the team who are proud to share their stories, and we always welcome new seasons and new to the market produce from suppliers and give it a go. We care deeply about our country’s environment so source locally, sustainable produce and strictly avoid the likes of dredged scallops and at-risk species such as blue fin tuna and whitebait. We get that a restaurants carbon foot print can be significant so meet the challenge of minimising it with an Environmark program.

Pearl 13: The Grillslinger

A builder's tool belt sparked an idea: what if there was a tool belt for barbecue lovers?

Grillslinger was born. The project became a collaboration between several talented Wellington businesses, and before long we were launching at the world’s biggest BBQ show in Atlanta. To our surprise, Grillslinger won a Vista Award for Best New BBQ Accessory, opening doors in the UK, USA, and Australia.

Then the global financial crisis hit. Sales slowed, the economics became challenging, and our dream of retiring on Grillslinger profits quietly fizzled out.

But the lessons, friendships, and adventures made it all worthwhile. And while that door was closing, an even more exciting opportunity was about to open.

Pearl 12: The Chutney Project

With a strong team behind us and the business thriving, we began looking beyond the four walls of Logan Brown and exploring new ideas. One of those was a range of chutneys and relishes inspired by Al's seasonal creations, especially a much-loved beetroot relish.

We investigated manufacturing, shelf life, and supermarket distribution, only to discover that making the numbers work would mean compromising on quality. That wasn't an option, so we pulled the pin.

The project never reached the shelves, but the lessons we learned would prove invaluable for the ventures that followed. And the next idea would take us around the world.
