1876 Legacy Beer, Dark Ale, 5.2%ABV

This legacy brew is a tribute to one of the four original beers produced. Based on the oldest recipes found and interpreted by our Speight’s brewers.

1876 Legacy batch, a smooth, dark ale with elegant notes of roasted malt, cocoa, and a hint of coffee. Despite its deep colour, the body is light and crisp, with restrained bitterness and a clean, dry finish. Subtle toasty sweetness balances the roast, making it highly drinkable and deceptively refreshing.

GETTING GREAT, GREAT, GREAT BEER TO YOU.

1876 Speights is born.

1880 A new brew house is built in Dunedin for Speights.

1913 Speights buys a motorised cart (truck) used for delivering casks to local pubs.

1984 Speights introduced their beer cans. Beer still brewed in Dunedin then sent to christchurch via the train to be canned. With much then to be sent back to Dunedin for sale.

1999 The first 'Speights Ale House' restaurant was opened in Dunedin.

2001 Speights become so popular extra production starts in Auckland. However the Dunedin brewery continues to brew today.

2012 Speights ale house restaurant Wanaka opens in December.

1876 Speights Is bought to life by three
men.

James Speight the buisness man behind the Dunedin
brewery.
Charles Greenslade the maltster and William Dawson
the brewer.

Four years later In 1880 Speights Ale wins two gold
medals at the Melbourne expidition. With that the name
'Gold Medal Ale ' was born.

By 1887 Speights becomes the biggest brewry in New
Zealand. Exporting to Australia, Fiji and Tahiti. This
year also sees the passing of James Speight aged 53,
eleven years after founding Speights.
William Dawson, well he becomes mayor of Dunedin
aged 35.
