You'll find Bull Creek around 25 minutes east of Milton on the coast.

The P**n Fah Joss House on a winter morning

The P**n Fah Joss House is one of the most significant Chinese heritage buildings in New Zealand. It stands within the Lawrence Chinese Camp and is believed to be the only surviving Chinese joss house (temple/public hall) in New Zealand.

* Built: Around 1899, replacing an earlier meeting hall (the Naam-Shun Joss House built in 1869).
* Purpose: Although Europeans called it a “joss house,” the Chinese community regarded it as a public hall. It served several important roles:
* a community meeting place
* a place of worship with an ancestral altar
* a hospice where elderly or terminally ill miners were cared for.
* Relocation: In 1947, after the Chinese camp was abandoned, the building was moved into Lawrence and used as a holiday cottage.
* Return to the camp: The Lawrence Chinese Camp Charitable Trust purchased the building and, after careful restoration, returned it to its original location in 2016.
