Come to RICHIES with an Empty Cup, but a Hungry Mind.

When I first arrived in Aotearoa, New Zealand, in 2007, I carried more dreams than possessions. My most valuable luggage wasn’t much at all. It was a mindset: the willingness to learn, the courage to unlearn and the ability to adapt.

Nearly two decades later, that same lesson remains at the heart of Richie’s Way.

When someone comes to work for Richie’s, I don’t expect them to arrive as a fully grown tree. I look for a seed with the courage to grow.

Skills can be taught. Experience can be earned. Mistakes can be corrected. But a closed mind is like a locked door, even when opportunity is knocking.

In New Zealand, we must learn to respect its people, embrace its culture, understand its way of life and adapt to the changing world without losing our own identity.

Learn what you don’t know. Unlearn what no longer works. Adapt to what tomorrow demands.

At Richie’s, we don’t simply make pies, serve coffee or sell groceries. We grow people, create opportunities and build a future together.

Come with the right mindset. Bring your willingness to learn. The rest, we can build together.

That’s the lesson I brought to Aotearoa in 2007, and it’s still the philosophy I live by today.

From Wairoa to Richie’s Mayfair

What a beautiful surprise today! One of our Wairoa whānau walked into Richies Mayfair with a special request:

“Take a photo with me — I want my whānau back in Wairoa to know I made it to Richie’s Mayfair, Hastings.” and this comes with hook that if I dare to post she’s gonna come and eat all the foods! 😂 Now she’s too late for Pāua pie but waiting for us to heat up one!

That’s what makes this journey special. RICHIES may now have two places, but it’s still one whānau — connected from Wairoa to Hastings.

Thanks for calling in, sharing the smile, and bringing a little piece of Wairoa with you. ❤️

AI is out. SI is in?

President Donald Trump told the UN that America should stop calling it Artificial Intelligence (AI) and start calling it Super Intelligence (SI) — because “artificial” makes it sound fake.

Trump says the technology could become bigger than the Industrial Revolution and wants the US to encourage its development rather than heavily restrict it.

One important distinction: “superintelligence” already has a technical meaning — intelligence exceeding human capabilities. So changing AI to SI isn’t merely changing two letters; it could blur the line between today’s AI and a much more powerful future technology.

AI helps humans think.
True SI could eventually outthink us.

And that is where the real debate begins.

For us, RICHIES has never been just about selling food. It’s about creating a place where everyday people can come in, feel welcome, enjoy good food and hopefully leave with a smile.

You’ll find our homemade hot pies, baked fresh with the experience we’ve built over many years. Then we’ve got our fresh salad rolls and sammies, ready for a quick lunch on the go.

And if you’re hungry for something hearty, check out our roast meals — pork, beef or lamb — good, simple comfort food made the Richie’s way.

Of course, there’s coffee, cold drinks and plenty more as we continue building and improving the shop.

We started Richie’s in Wairoa, and bringing our little family business into Mayfair, Hastings is another big chapter for us.

We’re still learning, still improving, and there’s plenty more coming.

Most importantly, thank you to everyone who has already walked through these doors, bought something, shared our posts, given us feedback or simply wished us well.

Your support means more than you probably realise.

Wairoa built us. Mayfair welcomed us. Now let’s grow together.
