Today, the NZ Government announced plans to ban under-16s from having social-media accounts, with legislation being introduced to Parliament. The aim is to protect young people from cyberbullying, harmful content, exploitation and social-media addiction. Social-media companies would carry responsibility for preventing underage accounts through age-assurance measures. The proposal follows similar moves overseas, particularly Australia.

Weather forecasting may become “politics of fear” when warnings feel exaggerated or frequent, causing people to question motives.

Governments must balance safety and public trust. Too much alarm risks panic and loss of credibility; too little risks harm. In New Zealand politics, the real issue is proportional response — protecting communities while maintaining confidence, transparency, and calm leadership during uncertain weather events.

From Pukepuke Lagoon to Waiatāi Stream near Wairoa, the message is becoming clear for New Zealand.
Hundreds of tuna — some 40 to 50 years old — died when oxygen levels in the water collapsed during extreme weather stress. 

Is it climate or human activity? Both.
Could it happen elsewhere? Yes, where waterways are fragile.
Food safety begins with ecosystem safety.

New Zealand’s pride has always been kaitiakitanga — protecting water, land, and food before warning signs turn into economic losses.
