The Waikino Station Cafe is the ideal place to stop for a coffee before you start exploring the Karangahake Gorge with its network of walkways. The historic Victoria Battery is just a short walk from the café and with the new Hauraki Rail Trail up and running Waikino Station is the perfect place to stop off for lunch.Goldfields Railway operates daily providing passengers with a nostalgic journey between the historic gold mining town of Waihi and the Waikino Station. They even cater for cyclists wanting to put their cycles on the train and put their feet up for part of the journey.The journey by vintage train, takes in the country side with views of the Ohinemuri River along the way.There are open and closed carriages for your comfort (Wheelchair access with prior arrangement)

The Waikino Station Café was esstablished in 2000. We are very proud of our home-style products made on the premises, and our ability to serve large groups on a tight schedule. Today's the day!
As of today we're back on track with limited trips & availability while we are still under active maintenance, so hop aboard if your keen for a ride; fortnightly timetable on our website's booking page.

Goldfields Railway while still undergoing maintenance will be returning to limited service starting Saturday 12th.
Please check with us on 07 863 9020 before bringing Bikes.

UPDATE: Goldfields Railway - PASSENGER SERVICE DATES
DATE: 4 September 2026
ISSUE: 🚂 Goldfields Railway is looking forward to resuming operations with a set schedule soon. For now the following dates are available for trail users to take the train:

Saturday 12 September - departing Waihi 11.30am and 1.45pm. Departing Waikino - 1.00pm and 2.30pm (2.30pm is a one-way trip only).

Sunday 13 September - departing Waihi at 9.45am and 11.30am. Departing Waikino - 10.45am and 1.00pm. (1.00pm is a one-way trip only).

Friday 18 September - departing Waihi Station at 1.45pm

The train may not be able to carry bikes on their first weekend back, so please call ahead to check prior to travel 07 863 9020.

We’ll share further updates as they come to hand. Please note the Waikino Station Café remains open for trail users to enjoy. 🚴‍♀️ 💚
