Two feels tiny — until it's the whole reason for a cake.
This little mini cake was made for a 2nd birthday right here in Taupō: soft cream buttercream, hand-piped pearls, and a cluster of neon pink cake pops floating on piped buttercream strings like balloons. Vanilla all the way through. Small cake, big moment.

Some birthdays get a card. This one got a whole send-off.
Twenty is a funny, brilliant milestone — old enough to feel it, young enough that the teens still feel like yesterday. So this red velvet went out with a message that said exactly that: goodbye teens, hello twenties.
Little hand-piped hearts, a cream buttercream finish, and that deep red velvet crumb underneath. Made to mark the moment, not just fill the table.

Ever put hours into something, stepped back, and just known it had to go?
That was me at 11pm, staring at this cake. I had the base coat on, took one step back, and my heart sank. It looked terrible. So back into the fridge it went to firm up, and the next morning I scraped the whole thing back and started again.
Nobody sees that part. They see the finished cake, not the version that got binned first. But that is the job. You keep going until it is right, because a wee one only turns 2 once.
This one came together in the end. A 2-tier roar of a birthday cake, chocolate on the bottom, red velvet up top.

I nearly piped "name is nine" onto a birthday cake 😅
Got so into the cherries and Lambeth piping that I started writing the placeholder text instead of the actual name. Mum and I had a proper laugh before I caught it — for the record, it was meant to be the birthday kid's name, not some obscure kids' TV show reference.
In the end I left the writing off altogether and let the cherries, bows and piping do the talking. Reckon it's better for it.

Some 21sts call for balloons. This one called for antlers.
A two-tier build for a milestone birthday with a proper hunting theme — a black and navy base with a fine gold seam running through it, and a warm brown wood-grain top tier finished with a stag topper.
Chocolate and biscoff layered inside, because a 21st should taste as good as it looks.
