Health warning issued for Lake Maraetai

3 March 2023
A health warning has been issued today for Lake Maraetai. The health warning is based on the results released today for levels of cyanobacteria, or algal bloom, in water samples provided by the Waikato Regional Council.

“It is important to avoid any activity which results in contact with the lake water,” says Dr Jim Miller, Medical Officer of Health for Toi Te Ora Public Health.

Cyanobacteria can release toxins which can trigger asthma and hayfever symptoms, skin rashes, stomach upsets, and in some cases neurological effects such as tingling around the mouth, headaches, breathing difficulties and visual problems.

“Algal mats and scum may also accumulate along the shoreline of the lake and so it’s especially important that parents ensure that children avoid contact with these as they may be toxic,” says Dr Miller.

Dogs are particularly at risk and should also be kept away from the shoreline. Elsewhere in New Zealand there have been reported deaths of dogs that have eaten algae on shorelines.

We are absolutely overwhelmed by the amount of support for keeping the bus stop cafe at the lake.

For us the verbal meeting we had with Julie Gordon and Greg Hadley on the 18th of August 2022 was a complete shock. We were told that the bus will need to move when the new toilets are started. We asked about where we could move the bus to? Only to be told "once the bus move the bus does not come back"
Over the last nearly 6 months we have been contemplating what next for us.
We have seen what the council can do without consultation of all the community and to be sitting down at the lake not knowing what the future holds is sadly over for us.
It's been a great 18years,we have met so many lovely people. This has been a very hard decision for us to make but OH well apparently this is progress for the community.
It's just a shame that this progress(in our opinion)we cannot see benefiting Mangakino, we do hope we are proven wrong.
We will miss all the wonderful events that bring so many lovely people to our lakefront:Powerboats/GP hydroplanesSpeed skiing Lake hopSummer concertTaniwha raceSummer sizzlerCrozzie challenge Motorhome rallies/Wakley groupCar/motorbike groupsJet ski racing
and all the other lake users/locals/holiday people/ visitors that have come and supported us through the years.
Thank you all so so much we would not have been able to do this without you all.

Our last day for trading will be the 10th of April 2023.

Now lets plan on making sure that stage 2 of the lakefront plan is generated by the whole community not just a few.

Take care and once again
THANK YOU ALL
