Merry Christmas & thank you for the J O Y you gave us in 2025. Thank you for supporting our small space & giving us reasons to show up, smile & grind coffee continuously throughout the year. Shanelle, Levi & I are grateful for all of you and especially our fabulous locals who show up on the regular. Thank you for trusting us, not just to make your coffee but to hold space for you to share pieces of your life with us. The births, the deaths, the marriages, the break ups; exam passes and fails, house sales, big moves, the gains and the losses. Thank you for treating the shop like a local living room to talk, read, eat, laugh and cry. It’s a special space to us & we hope you feel that when you visit.
It’s been an absolute pleasure & we look forward to doing it all again in 2026.
We’ll be open again on Tuesday 20th January. 💛

In preparation for this Sunday’s Rongotea Christmas Parade, the tree is up in the shop - complete with a few 2nd hand decorations from our neighbour The Recycle Room. ♻️
We are both open this SUNDAY 23rd Nov in the hopes we too will get to see the jolly big guy. Surely he’s fueled by coffee & toasted sandwiches & loves a pre-Xmas op shop bargain?

Recently a loyal customer was repeatedly purchasing multiples of our gorgeous yellow, Make Joy cookies and she shared with me that they were for people she was visiting in hospital as they really brightened their day as well as being delicious with a cuppa.
Last year I spent a month in hospital recovering & it’s not a place where joy is in abundance at all so this small act made me feel all the feels. It also reminded me why I opened this little coffee shop & why I called it Make Joy.
Joy for me is brightening the day. Putting light into the room. Lighting up my face & space to light up another’s.
And not just when it’s easy. I can be fun, enthusiastic and kind when I’m in a good mood but my winning moments are when I can do it for others when I’m not in great head space. When I can smile at you, hear your story & hand you your coffee even when I’m suffering with a grumpy mood, that’s my definition of making joy. It turns it all around to do that. Stepping out of my bad mood to be kind to you helps me comfort myself too.
Joy is the purpose. Spread it, make it, talk it and share it. This coffee shop is my joy & no matter what energy comes through the door it won’t shift me. The environment doesn’t shift me I shift it. And I move it toward joy. Thank you to all our customers for helping me do that. 💛
