This incredible skull sculpture has been generously lent to us by local sculptor Steven Saunders

Steven has some seriously impressive creative credentials and we feel pretty lucky to have one of his creations taking pride of place in our little plant jungle this Halloween.

Something new is coming out of The Elephant Ear kitchen!

We’re bringing a little old-school goodness to your next work morning tea, meeting, team lunch or office celebration.

Think fresh finger sandwiches, mini quiches, savoury bites, homemade scones, classic slices, sweet treats and grazing platters made for sharing.

We’ve kept things simple with three easy catering options, so you can spend less time organising the food and more time enjoying it.

To celebrate the launch, we’ll be offering catering deliveries Monday to Friday to begin with, while we get everything up and running.

Made fresh with care in our Petone kitchen, using all the good old-fashioned favourites. Pickup can be made at either or Petone or Fairfield stores. Delivery to local areas by arrangement.

💚 A little goodbye to our Emma. 💚

Tomorrow is Emma’s last day with us at The Elephant Ear, and honestly, we’re not ready to let her go.

Emma walked through our doors during our fit-out, asked if we had a job going, and the rest is history. She’s become so much more than just a staff member. She’s been my rock, a familiar face for so many of you, and a huge part of what makes our little shop what it is.

We’re so incredibly grateful for everything she’s brought to our team, the hard work, the loyalty, the laughs, and all the little things that probably go unnoticed but mean the world.

While we’re so excited for her next chapter, we’re going to miss her more than she knows. 🥹

So, if Emma has ever made your coffee, had a chat with you, or been part of your morning routine, pop into our Petone store tomorrow and say goodbye! Come grab one last coffee, give her a hug, and help us send her off with all the love she deserves. 💚

🚨 MISSING: ONE VERY LOVED TEAPOT 🚨

Last seen at The Elephant Ear 10.10.26. 🥹

Our little teapot has gone missing, and we’re beginning to think it may have been tea-napped. 🫖

It’s part of our little shop family, and we’d really quite like it back, please.

If you’ve accidentally taken it home, fallen in love with it, or know anything about its whereabouts, we’re offering a full pardon, no questions asked for its safe return.

No police. No interrogation. Just one very happy little plant shop reunited with its teapot. 💚

My first boss. ❤️

I’ve been in Perth for the week and had the chance to catch up with my old boss, Ronnie, who I haven’t seen in over 20 years.

Ronnie and her husband, Graeme, were my first bosses at Wendy’s Super Sundaes in New Zealand, over 30 years ago. My very first hospo job.

Sadly Graeme passed away last year, and sitting down with Ronnie, sharing memories from all those years ago and hearing her talk about him, reminded me of where I first developed the work ethic I still carry with me today.

I remember Graeme teaching me to “work like you own the business.”

He taught me to be proud of whatever job you’re doing — whether you’re making a milkshake, serving a customer or mopping the floor. It doesn’t matter what the job is; do it properly, take pride in it and give it your best.

At the time, I probably didn’t realise how much those words would stay with me.

But 30 years later, I still think about them. And looking back, I can see how much those early lessons have shaped me, the way I work and the way I run The Elephant Ear today. (Although if I’m honest I still hate mopping floors 😅)

It was pretty special to sit with Ronnie again after all these years, remembering Graeme and those early days.

Some people teach you lessons that stay with you for a lifetime. ❤️
