I just reposted a clip from a Tony Williams clinic, where he stresses the importance of taking the time to learn the details in regards of your heroes - grooves, feel, dynamics, everything! Not just the low-hanging fruit of tasty fills.

I emphasise this with all my students and can’t stress it enough. Take the time, don’t cut corners, and focus on the details. From there, you can work out what works for you and what doesn’t, and that in turn, overtime, becomes your voice.

Yesterday I was invited to hold a MasterClass down at .

With a range of skill levels in attendance, plus a couple of guitarists, I kicked things off by discussing the role of a drummer - playing to the music and building a strong foundation.

From there, I took them through my approach and mindset at their age, which was all about commitment to the craft and always doing things to the highest standard possible.

Then we got into what I call ‘needle-moving concepts’ I found in my mid-20s. Simple ideas, but things that really elevated my playing as a session musician. Traditional ideas that are severely lacking from modern drum education.

I then gave them a couple of concepts to open up their mechanics and their facility/creativity, and performed a couple examples of the type of session work I do on both ends of the musical spectrum - stripped back, and all-in! I then finished with a popular song that uses a lot of the concepts I shared.

It was a great class. The kids were engaged and asked some great questions too.

A close second to working on my own craft is pulling excitement out of people through my ideas and concepts. This relates to both on and off the kit too. It’s extremely fulfilling, especially the older I get.
