Since you'll loved last months Old Farmer's Almanac tradition, if you're born in September or October ... then this one is for you! 🗓️
Catnip is your birth herb! Most of us know catnip for its potent effect on cats, but it has a surprisingly colourful history of use for humans too... 💫
A member of the mint family, it was traditionally used as a gentle, calming herb to support relaxation, sleep, digestion and gentle perspiration during fevers.
Catnip was a common household remedy for centuries and appears in influential herbal texts dating back to the 11th century. Its name is thought to come from the ancient Etruscan city of Nepte, where it was widely cultivated for culinary and
medicinal use 🤔
It’s the Folklore where it becomes very interesting.... One old English herbalist claimed that chewing the root could make even the gentlest person quarrelsome. Another story told of an infamous hangman who supposedly couldn't summon the courage to do his job until he'd taken some....
Catnip is still used today by modern herbalists as a nervine, just as it was traditionally. For relaxation, nervous tension and anxiety as well as digestive discomfort. It is simple to grow and really does make a good cup of tea ☕
