We are happy to let everyone know that Courtyard Restaurant is now serving Chinese dinner to the local community every evening except Tuesday. Dinner hours are from 6 pm to 8 pm. We serve freshly cooked, authentic Chinese dishes, and we’d love for more people in Oamaru to come and give our food a try. As we sometimes have large group bookings, the restaurant can get quite busy. We recommend booking ahead by phone or sending us a message through Messenger. This helps us make sure we have a table available for you and allows us to provide a better dining experience. Walk-ins are always welcome, but during busy evenings we may not be able to guarantee a table without a booking. If you haven’t tried our Chinese food yet, come and give it a try. We think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. We look forward to seeing you at Courtyard Restaurant.

We’ve really appreciated all the messages and honest feedback we’ve received. It’s been great to hear that people enjoyed the food, that families were sharing the dishes together, and that some of you are already keen to come back and try more!

The test was very helpful for us. We’re listening to your feedback and making a few final adjustments before we officially get started.

Our next step is to get on to Uber Eats, and we’re hoping to have our Chinese takeaway menu available sometime next week. 🤞

We’ll let everyone know as soon as we have the exact launch date confirmed.

You don’t have to wait for Uber Eats to try our Chinese food.

Our Chinese dishes are now also available during our normal dinner service hours, from 6:00pm–8:00pm, every evening except Tuesday.

So if you’d like to come in and enjoy Chinese food for dinner, you’re very welcome!

Dinner: 6:00pm–8:00pm

Closed Tuesday

We look forward to seeing you!

Long ago, in the bustling alleys of Taiwan, braised pork rice began as a simple , hearty meal for working people. Just a bowl of steamed rice topped with slow-braised pork, soy sauce, and a touch of sweetness.Over time, it became more than just food, it became comfort.A memory of home, warm and reassuring.Today,it still carries that feeling, connecting people with a taste of tradition in every bite.

Egg fried rice looks ordinary, but in Chinese cooking, it’s often treated as a kind of touchstone. The grains of rice must stay light and separate, evenly scented with egg. If the heat or timing is even slightly off, the result is completely different. What people really pay attention to is the so-called ‘wok hei’ — the breath of the wok, that deep aroma and texture that only comes from quick stir-frying over high heat. No fancy ingredients, no complicated presentation, just rice, egg, and skill, yet It’s this simplicity that makes egg fried rice such a quiet measure of a cook’s fundamentals. Sometimes the simplest food carries the deepest craft. Simple, yet touching.

Have you ever wondered why Sichuan cuisine is so famous for its bold, spicy flavors? Sichuan is known for its humid climate, with cold, damp winters. Traditionally, people found that eating spicy, warming foods helped the body feel warmer and more comfortable. Over time, this bold flavor profile became deeply rooted in Sichuan’s food culture. Chili peppers bring the heat, while Sichuan peppercorns add their famous tingling, numbing sensation. Together, they form the distinctive “mala” flavor we know today. But Sichuan cuisine is not just about hot and spicy; it’s about balance and layers of flavor: spicy, subtle sweetness, tangy notes, savory depth, all woven together. One classic example is “Yu Xiang Rou Si”-Fish fragrance pork. Interestingly, even though the name means “fish fragrance”, there is no fish in it. It refers to a seasoning style that blends savory, sweet, sour, and gentle spice using simple ingredients. It’s the kind of dish that pairs perfectly with a steaming bowl of rice. Yu Xiang Rou Si will be one of the dishes on our upcoming Chinese takeaway menu. What we want to share is not just food, but also the stories, regions, and culture behind the dishes we grew up with. One dish, one story. This is just the beginning. More dishes and more stories coming soon.
