Our guests for this month are Barry & Lorna Swallow, who will be performing at The Fitz this coming Sunday, 27 July at 3pm. Entry $10 on the door.
Barry and Lorna met through Folkie friends back in the late 1970’s. They shared a love of the music of Nic Jones, who has subsequently been a major influence on Barry’s guitar playing.
They settled in Taupo and raised their family there, and in retirement purchased their distinctive motorhome/bus which enabled them to enjoy the music and fellowship of folk festivals.
Barry uses open tunings on his guitar to work out intricate accompaniments, for songs he has chosen for their thought-provoking lyrics and strong melodies.
In recent years, Lorna has developed an interest in playing Celtic tunes on low whistles, tunes chosen for their memorable melodies.
As usual, the firsst half of the afternoon will feature invited floor singers. Barry and Lorna will perform the entire second half.

We are on the look out for a Front of House staff member to join our exciting and fun team at The Fitz.

The position is around 20 hours per week and does include weekends and nights.

Experience will be helpful for the applicant, A duty Managers would also be useful but not necessary.

Our first guest of 2025 is a familiar face to regulars at Folk@The Fitz. Born and raised in New Plymouth, Neil Cleaver started playing drums for money at age 13, playing at cabarets and country dances, and was part of a Shadows cover band at Spotswood College. He was introduced to folk music while studying at Palmerston North Teachers College, spending his money on records by Bob Dylan, Tom Rush, The Jim Kweskin Jug Band and Leadbelly. Over the next 25 years or so, he formed an enthusiasm for New Zealand-based songs and began to write his own, which he performed alongside covers.

A seasoned performer at folk festivals over the years, the Taranaki Boy returns home after a couple of decades away, with a collection of original songs, plus some of his favourites by other writers. Neil also has a few stories to tell along the way.

As usual at Folk @ The Fitz, the first half will feature invited floor singers. Neil will perform the entire second half.

3pm, Sunday 23 February. Entry $10 on the door
