Three years ago, I never imagined I would be a boss. But I took a leap of faith and hired my first staff member, Dana. Just two months after she joined me, I found a location to open our first shop.

Fast forward to 2025, and our team had grown to 18. Today, we have 15 staff members, and I finally feel like we’ve found our sweet spot.

A year after opening our Napier store, life brought another enormous change: I found out I was going to be a mum! As someone still finding her feet in business, those nine months were some of the scariest of my life.

I had a three-year shop lease hanging over my head and was working 80-hour weeks while growing a whole human. At the same time, I was passing on everything I knew to Dana so she could take the reins during my maternity leave. It was an incredibly challenging time, and I’ll always be grateful for her ❤️

Then, just three months postpartum, a kitchen space became available in Onekawa. We moved our kitchen and opened our Hastings store at the same time. Looking back, it’s hard to believe how much we took on during such a huge chapter of my life.

I want to be honest with you: owning a business right now is harder than it has ever been for us.

Ingredient prices keep rising, along with the cost of shipping our cake supplies. We’re constantly adjusting how much we make to meet changing demand, while doing our best to give our team enough hours—even during the quiet weeks. Behind every dessert is a lot of planning, hard work and care.

But here we are, celebrating three years this week. Despite the uncertainty, and the advice that opening and growing in this economy was too risky, we’ve kept our doors open. That is something I’m incredibly proud of—and it’s thanks to our amazing community. 🥰

Every visit, every purchase and every bit of support has helped us get here. I know you work hard for your money, and choosing to spend some of it with Cuteneys means more to me than I can put into words. I will never take that for granted.

I’ll continue to give this business my all, keep the desserts coming, and adapt as we grow to give Cuteneys Cakes the strongest future I can.
