DUMPLINGS & DUB is back for Labour Weekend.

It’s been a while since our last one in January, and we’re pretty excited to bring it back.
This one feels like the start of summer arriving properly. Longer evenings, the courtyard filling up again, dumplings coming out of the kitchen, drinks flowing, and bass rolling through Brewed As.
If you’ve been to a Dumplings & Dub before, you know the vibe. If you haven’t, this is a pretty good one to start with.
We’ve also got a little something extra planned for once the sun goes down...

Sunday 25 Oct
4.30pm - 10.30pm
Tickets $10

Bring the crew, come hungry, and settle in for a big Sunday session.

We're probably never going to grow cheap coffee in New Zealand.

And that's kind of the point.

Over the last couple of weeks we've been following the beginnings of a New Zealand-grown coffee industry, with Northland right at the heart of it.

But if we're going to grow coffee here, we're unlikely to compete with the world's major coffee-producing countries on sheer volume.

The opportunity is somewhere much more interesting.

Quality over quantity.

Small crops of specialty coffee, carefully grown and processed, where the variety, the conditions it was grown in, when it was picked and what happens after harvest all play a part in what eventually ends up in the cup.

And then there's provenance.

Knowing where the coffee was grown. Knowing the people behind it. Understanding the land, the variety and the work that went into producing it.

That's the part of this Northland coffee story that gets us pretty excited.

We're not imagining endless bags of locally grown coffee arriving at Brewed As. If this develops the way people hope, these could be small, distinctive harvests where quality matters far more than quantity.

The kind of coffee you might only get to taste for a short time.

And honestly, that makes it even more interesting.

How good could a truly Northland-grown specialty coffee be?

This is what summer evenings are looking like This is what summer evenings are looking like at Brewed As.

Longer days, tables in the courtyard, a few drinks and summer produce making its way into the kitchen.

We’ve been busy in the kitchen over the last few weeks. Teriyaki Lamb Skewers, Beef Tataki and Tempura Eggplant & Banana Blossom are among the first of the new dishes to land. Our Seasonal Greens have had a summer rethink too, and there are still a few more plates making their way onto the menu over the coming weeks.

Fresh, full of flavour and best ordered for the table.

If you haven’t joined us for an evening before, come and see what we’ve been working on.

First day of the holidays, and the little brunch crew have their own French toast waiting.

French toast with caramelised banana, vanilla cream and maple syrup on the side. Simple, sweet and made with smaller appetites in mind.

And because watching them eat French toast while you drink a coffee seems a little unfair, you might want to order one of your own.

Brunch & lunch every day until 3pm throughout the school holidays.

Turning it up a little on Saturdays.

Gareth’s back behind the decks this weekend, digging through the collection and seeing where the morning takes him.

Funk, soul, Latin, global grooves, downtempo, house, a little dub and plenty that doesn’t fit neatly into a box.

No set playlist. No particular genre. Just music we’re into, selected for a Saturday in the courtyard.

Eggplant is coming into its own as we head towards summer, so it seemed only right to find a home for it on the evening menu.

We've paired it with our tempura banana blossom from winter, fresh julienne carrot, courgette & bean sprouts, and that sweet umami dipping sauce.

Tempura Eggplant & Banana Blossom.

A familiar dish, just moving with the season.

GF + vegan friendly

On our evening menu, Wednesday to Saturday from 5:30pm.

School holidays tend to bring a little more life to Mangawhai. ☀️

More people around, more families catching up, more time for lunch without watching the clock.

So for the October school holidays, Kids Eat Free at Brewed As.

Monday to Friday, join us for lunch from 12-2:30pm, or come in for an early dinner, and we’ll shout the kids’ meal with every adult main.

Because getting everyone around the table should be one of the easy parts of the holidays.

One free kids meal with every adult main.

Fridays at Brewed As, Mangawhai

Coffee, brunch and lunch through the day. A few people catching up, a few staying longer than planned.

Then from 5:30, we move into evenings. Share plates, drinks, and a bunch of new plates making their way onto the menu as we head towards summer.

Plenty to try, plenty of time around the table.

Pretty much how we like a Friday to look.

Well, this pivot worked out rather nicely. 👀

A little while ago we told you our lamb ribs were making a comeback for summer. Then we did the final numbers and, with where lamb ribs are sitting this season, we just couldn't put them on the menu at a price we felt good about.

So back to the kitchen we went.

And honestly, we're pretty happy we did.

Meet our new Teriyaki Lamb Skewers. Charred lamb with courgette, capsicum & red onion, kawakawa salsa verde, and a fresh salad of bean sprouts, Asian herbs, spinach, red onion & spring onion, finished with teriyaki sauce.

It's brighter, fresher, loaded with texture and flavour, and feels much more at home on our summer evening menu.

Sometimes Plan B turns out better than Plan A.

On evenings Wednesday to Saturday from 5:30pm.

So, why Northland?

Last week we shared that something pretty exciting is starting to take root here in Te Tai Tokerau: coffee.

But why Northland?

Turns out our little corner of the country has some pretty interesting things going for it when it comes to growing coffee.

There’s still plenty to learn. Which varieties will thrive here, where they'll grow best, and ultimately, just how good can Northland-grown coffee be?

That’s the bit we're particularly interested in.

Swipe through for a little Northland coffee growing 101.

And while we're definitely getting ahead of ourselves...

Grown in Northland. Roasted in Northland. Brewed in Mangawhai.

We'd quite like to see that one day.
