It’s fair to say that I became quite attached to my Little Jem during my first trading season! I had many attempts at closing for the season and kept finding a reason to open. Then on Sunday I ran out of ice cream, frozen yoghurt and fruit so I took that as a sign it was time! My last customer was a well known Hutt Valley ex politician and I was terrified he was going to order 2 ice creams when I only had enough for one. Luckily he was travelling solo. After scraping the box there was just enough ice cream and strawberry left for a small ice cream for me. What better way to toast the completion of my first fun season. I know I keep saying I’m closed for the season and I sort of am but …. today is the opening of a beautiful exhibition by fabulous Wellington artist Kit Ong. Alfred thought real fruit ice cream combined with some chill live music by Don Franks and Alfred on sax would be a great combination to enjoy viewing this beautiful exhibition. So for today only I am open again (until I run out of ice cream, yoghurt or fruit!). We would love to see you at Artspace Gallery 223 The Esplanade from 1-4pm today.

What a blast my first season operating Beachside Real Fruit Ice Cream has been. Thanks Alfred for creating the perfect gallery space and recognising that ice cream would be a great addition to browsing beautiful art. Thank you to my amazing customers. I have made over 5000 ice creams this season and a highlight has been getting to know my regular customers and welcoming new customers each week. I will be open today and tomorrow then I will see you again at Labour weekend. The gallery will still have yummy Kapiti and Tiptop ice creams in its freezer and cold drinks for those of us who enjoy ice cream regardless of the season. Today’s tough job was more market research to figure out how well located Beachside Real Fruit Ice Cream and Artspace Gallery is to welcome cyclists and walkers doing the harbour loop. Today I rode the newly opened Tupua Horo Nuku between Petone and Days Bay. What a stunning ride and fabulous cycle track. My conclusion was that we are perfectly placed about half way between Te Ara Tupua (Wellington to Petone) and Tupua Horo Nuku. The perfect real fruit ice cream or drink stop. Lunch at O’Malleys in Days Bay and a trip on the East by West ferry to complete the loop back to Queens Wharf would make a fabulous day trip. Having watched cyclists ride along The Esplanade all weekend I was excited to head out today to check out the new Te Ara Tupua cycleway. All I can say is “wow”. It was awesome!
