📷 **PIC OF THE WEEK - CAKE, CROWD, REACTION** 📷

Cake-cutting photos can feel a bit too tidy, often with a neutral background.

This shot from Gemma and Dimitar’s October 2023 wedding works because it doesn’t isolate the couple against a blank background. It keeps the guests in the frame, and that gives the whole image more life.

You get Gemma and Dimitar laughing over the cake, but you also get the room reacting behind them. Phones are up, people are focused, and the moment feels shared rather than staged for the camera.

The cake is still the centre of the action, but the guests give it the energy.

This frame shows the venue doing what it should once the formalities are over: keeping everyone close to the action.

🏆 SHAYE & KEANU MAKE THE CUT 🏆

A big congratulations to Shaye and Keanu, who’ve been named as finalists in Abel Estate’s Wedding of the Year event.

Their pop-up wedding made full use of what Abel does best: the vineyard, the lake, the rotunda, the gardens, and plenty of relaxed moments in between. It’s a strong reminder that a smaller wedding doesn’t have to feel limited. With the right setting, it can still feel full, polished and properly memorable.

As finalists, Shaye and Keanu are in the running to win a weekend away in a luxury lodge in the Bay of Islands. They’ll also feature in the Real Weddings section of Auckland Weddings, New Zealand’s leading wedding website.

📷 **PIC OF THE WEEK - ALMOST CAUGHT BY CHANCE** 📷

This looks like a quiet moment someone happened to notice.

Katrina and Evan are on the Abel Estate jetty in 2024, with the lake just catching the edge of the frame on the left. The lower angle keeps the couple slightly obscured behind the white railing, while the soft foreground blur makes the whole image feel less staged and more like a private pause.

That’s what makes it work. It’s clearly part of the photoshoot, but it doesn’t feel like a formal portrait. The kiss, the greenery, the lake, and the way the railing cuts cleanly across the image all make it feel natural without looking accidental.

The jetty is useful for exactly this kind of shot. It gives the photographer structure, water, depth and a clean line to work with, while still keeping the couple close to the gardens and reception area.

As Katrina said, “We love the many photo backdrops in Abel Estate. It gave so much variety in our photos.”

📷 **PIC OF THE WEEK - CAUGHT MID-LAUGH** 📷

This is the kind of photo you can’t force.

Alexandra and Loreen are standing in the Abel Estate grounds in 2022, tucked among the greenery, and the moment feels joyously real. One bride laughing out front, the other wrapped around her from behind, both clearly having the best time.

The composition helps too. The soft flowers in the foreground give the image depth, while the native planting behind them keeps everything relaxed and natural. It doesn’t feel staged, even though it’s clearly been framed beautifully.

That’s what makes the shot work. It isn’t trying too hard to be romantic. It just catches the two of them happy, close, and completely in the moment.

📷 **PIC OF THE WEEK - RELAXED, BUT PERFECTLY PLACED** 📷

A posed shot that doesn’t feel stiff.

Sunita and Joshua are on the garden seat beside the Abel Estate stream last year in the afternoon sun. Sunita’s dress falls across the seat, Joshua is tucked in close beside her, and the whole image feels easy without looking accidental.

That’s what makes it work. Everything is arranged well, but the couple still look completely relaxed. The white seat frames them cleanly, the greenery gives the shot depth, and the stream area adds a softer, quieter feel away from the main ceremony space.

It’s a good reminder that photo spots don’t need to be complicated. Sometimes a strong seat, good light and a bit of space are enough.

As Joshua said, Abel Estate’s “venue grounds itself is ripped straight from a romance novel.”

✨ SOFT LIGHT, SHARP CONTRAST ✨

Isabelle and Adam’s winter wedding kept the table styling simple, but it didn’t look plain.

The translucent fabric softened the long wooden tables, the seed lights added a warm glow, and the red silk roses gave the whole room a clean hit of colour. It’s a good reminder that you don’t always need a packed table to make an impact. Sometimes the contrast does the work.

The dark timber, glassware, white linen and warm lighting all sit nicely together in the Winery Room, giving the reception a polished look without making it feel overdone.

📷 **PIC OF THE WEEK - STILL KISSING AT THE HEAD TABLE** 📷

The ceremony might be over, but clearly the kissing hasn’t been packed away.

This shot of Anna and Karl at Abel Estate in August 2023 catches a romntic head-table moment: pink balloons, dessert still on the table, glasses half-finished, and the couple wrapped up in each other while the reception keeps moving around them.

That’s what makes this image work. It isn’t a posed portrait away from everyone. It’s a small romantic moment happening right in the middle of the party, which makes it feel warmer and more real.

The styling helps too. The balloons add colour without taking over, the timber table keeps it relaxed, and the simple white wall behind them lets the couple stay the focus.

It also shows why a reception space needs to feel good once everyone is seated, not just when it’s empty and styled for photos. The best reception images often come from the in-between moments: a kiss, a laugh, a quick look across the table.

As Anna said, Abel Estate had “a light and airy venue for the reception with the bar!”

💜 COLOUR BEATS WINTER 💜

Joon and Keith’s winter wedding had no interest in looking grey.

Inside, the tables used soft lilac runners, purple napkins, yellow accents and clean white place settings to bring proper colour into the Winery Room. Outside, the rotunda and aisle flowers picked up the same brighter palette, so the whole day still felt connected from ceremony to reception.

It’s a good example of how much difference styling can make, especially in winter. Abel Estate’s styling team can help with colour palettes, florals, table set-ups and décor choices, including silk flowers that can be adapted with splashes of colour to suit the look you’ve chosen.

So yes, winter can still look bright. You just need to style it on purpose.
