📷 PIC OF THE WEEK - FIRST LOOK, FULL SMILES 📷

Some first look photos are quiet. This one isn’t.

Shally and Mark are standing in front of the Abel Estate rotunda on a mid-winter wedding day, and the whole image is built around that instant reaction. No stiff posing. No overcooked drama. Just two people properly happy to see each other.

The rotunda gives the frame structure without taking over, and the winter light does its job well. Everything is bright, clean and crisp, which makes the smiles stand out even more. It feels personal, but still very much tied to the setting.

That’s what makes a first look useful too. It gives the couple a moment together before the ceremony, settles the nerves, and creates photos that don’t have to compete with the schedule.

☎️ GIFTS, WISHES AND VOICE MESSAGES ☎️

A guest table doesn’t need to be complicated. It just needs to be useful, easy to find, and good enough to look like part of the room.

This set-up on the Winery Room dance floor brings a few wedding extras together in one place: the wishing well for cards and gifts, the audio guest book, and a few simple styling details to finish it off.

The best part is that these are included in our styling packages, so you don’t have to source every little detail yourself.

The audio guest book is the fun bit. Guests pick up the old-style phone and leave a voice message for the couple. It can sit alongside a written guest book, or replace it if you want something with a bit more personality.

Written messages are lovely, but hearing people’s actual voices, the laughs, the pauses, the slightly emotional bits, gives you a different kind of keepsake.

Also, one day you’ll probably have to explain to someone under 10 what that phone was.

📷 PIC OF THE WEEK - LIFTED INTO THE MOMENT 📷

Some dancefloor shots are all about the move.

This one from Rochelle and Jason’s Abel Estate wedding in June last year has the lift, the laugh, the guests reacting, and then the dress doing half the work. The fabric catches the light and turns the whole frame into something much bigger than a quick dancefloor moment.

It’s dramatic, but not overdone. You can still see the room, the guests, the DJ, the applause and the couple clearly enjoying themselves. Nothing feels too polished. It feels like someone caught the exact second the reception properly kicked up a gear.

That’s what a good reception space needs to allow for. Dinner, speeches and views over the lake are one part of the evening. Then the room has to shift into music, movement and a bit of chaos without feeling cramped.

This shot has all of that.

🎀 HIGH TEA FOR A GREAT CAUSE 🎀

A fun afternoon out is even better when it’s backing something worthwhile.

Join us at Abel Estate on Sunday, Sep 13, from 1.30pm for our annual champagne high tea supporting the Breast Cancer Foundation. Tickets are $139pp, with at least $60 per person going directly to the charity.

You’ll get a delicious high tea, a complimentary glass of V***e Clicquot Champagne, red carpet photography, live music, and a guest speaker. There’ll also be a silent auction with some excellent prizes to help raise even more for the Foundation.

One in nine NZ women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lives. Abel Estate is proud to support the fight against this awful disease by donating use of the venue and running the event at cost.

Bring a few friends. Dress up in pink. Have a proper afternoon out for a cause that matters.

📷 PIC OF THE WEEK - CLOSE ENOUGH TO FEEL IT 📷

Not every lake photo needs the whole lake in it.

This shot of Lauren and Alex at Abel Estate in July 2023 works because it goes the other way. High angle, close in, with just enough of the jetty and water around them to make the setting clear without turning the couple into tiny figures in a landscape.

It feels private, which is the strength of the image. Their faces are close, the background falls away, and the lake becomes texture rather than scenery. You still know exactly where they are, but the moment stays with them.

That’s the value of having proper photo spots on-site. You can use the same feature, like the lake, in completely different ways. Wide and dramatic when you want scale. Close and quiet when the moment calls for it.

As Alex said, “The venue and grounds are beautiful.”

This frame proves you don’t need much more than that when the angle is right.

🍽️ ROUND TABLES, DIFFERENT ENERGY 🍽️

Rectangular tables have one kind of look. Round tables bring something different.

This Abel Estate set-up shows why. The Winery Room still feels open, balanced and easy to move through, but the room has a softer layout with more individual table styling. Each table gets its own little moment without the space feeling chopped up. The high ceilings, big windows and natural light help keep everything feeling bright and connected.

It’s a good option if you want a reception layout that feels a bit more relaxed, while still looking polished.

Round tables don’t have to feel old-fashioned. Done well, they’re clean, practical and surprisingly sharp.

📷 PIC OF THE WEEK - UMBRELLAS LIHTEN THE DAY 📷

Rainy wedding photos don’t have to feel like Plan B.

This shot of Finland and Kurt’s wedding party at Abel Estate in June 2023 makes the weather part of the image instead of something to hide. The white umbrellas add shape, height and a bit of personality, while the group’s expressions keep it relaxed rather than too posed.

The rotunda in the background gives the photo structure, and the wet paving adds a soft reflection that lifts the whole frame. It’s clean, bright and genuinely fun, which isn’t always what people expect from a winter wedding day.

It also shows why having strong photo spots close to the venue matters. When the weather changes, you can still move quickly, keep everyone comfortable, and get photos that feel like they belong to the day.

As Kurt said, even when the weather forced things inside, the ceremony still felt “deeply intimate, personal and beautiful.”

The umbrellas just helped tell the story properly.

🌿 ROUND TABLES, BETTER CONNECTED 🌿

Round tables don’t have to make a room feel broken into little islands.

For this Abel Estate set-up, venue stylist Nadine used a snaking table design to pull the room together, with soft fabric running through the tables and florals by Torey from Florescence_floral tying the whole look into one continuous line.

It keeps the comfort of round tables, but changes the feeling of the room. Guests still have their own space, without feeling cut off from everyone else.

That’s the difference good styling makes. It’s not just about making the tables look pretty. It shapes how the room works.

📷 PIC OF THE WEEK - NO FACES, STILL FULL OF FEELING 📷

You don’t always need the couple looking at the camera to make a photo land.

This shot of Cara and Logan at Abel Estate in October 2022 works because it catches them mid-walk, hand in hand, heading down towards the stream. No posing at the lens. No big expression needed. Just the right moment, framed by the willows, with the light doing half the work.

That’s what gives it its pull. You feel like you’re following them into a quiet part of the day, rather than watching a staged portrait.

It also shows why the grounds matter. The stream, the shade, the trees and the open grass give photographers room to create something softer and more natural without needing to leave the property.

As Cara put it, Abel Estate is “a beautiful, all inclusive venue” and “the perfect blank canvas for that modern vineyard wedding.”

This is exactly that. Simple, spacious, and not trying too hard.
