Sometimes the best work is done in the early hours ☀️ the quiet hum of the oven as I bake and time to collect my thoughts. We will be open all Matariki weekend including tomorrow! I will be making a special Matariki Seafood Chowder again so come down and see us over the weekend. 💚

Recently it has been mentioned by someone that they did not know who I was. So even though I consider myself an introverted person I thought it best to reintroduce myself better to everyone watching. Hi I’m Abby the operating owner at The Village Cafe. Myself and my husband Dave purchased the business in August 2023. Soon we will have owned it for three years and I feel those years have gone by very quickly. Dave kept his day job so I can pursue my passion so the cafe is my labour of love. We also have four children so our lives are very busy and we wouldn’t have it any other way. I am a northlander through and through I grew up here and other than 7 years in Wellington working and studying I have spent my whole life in Northland. My first job was as a kitchen hand in a very busy wellington cafe and after working in many hospitality settings I found I became obsessed with Cafes and cafe culture. I feel blessed to be within a generation who learnt how to do things without all the bells and whistles and then also have the pleasure of working with equipment that never once existed to compliment our trade. The cafe is my sanctuary and I feel most at peace when I am at work. When I moved to Kerikeri I settled at Cafe Zest where I worked over a period of 13 years. I learnt and grew there and built relationships with many people in this community. Yesterday was Cafe Zests last trading day ever after being sold and it marks a shift in life for many people including myself. The town is shifting and with many businesses changing hands and changing faces I have been asked lately to please never leave. I can tell you for certain that I am here to stay long term. I love our community and serving you all everyday gives me so much joy and satisfaction. I love my family and extended family. I love my staff they are my family also we often spend more time together than we would with our own families. I have kept my head down since losing my father last year but now with the new team I am blessed to have at the cafe I feel ready to grow again. Watch this space we will be launching new and exciting things! I thank you all for your ongoing support and love for me, my family and my wonderful staff.

It has taken some effort to find the person who now we know is solely responsible for the events that transpired the other day. Unfortunately in this innocent people have been accused and I need to clarify that:
Chelsea Burrows and Milk and Honey Collective have no involvement in the recent allegations. Chelsea Burrows is a valued member of Impact Northland trust, supporting rangatahi and the wider community and was one of the individuals questioned out of original concern. We apologise for any confusion caused and ask that this incorrect information is not shared further.
We appreciate the communities support with this, I understand everyone’s need to know who the person in question is but spreading rumours is damaging and has created a further problem from this situation.

Thank you to the people who showed support to us today over the photo posted without our staff members consent. You never know what anyone is going through at any given time so this judgement was completely unwarranted and gross behaviour! If the woman (yes I said woman) would like to come and apologise (yes we know who you are we have cameras all over the cafe) we are waiting. This is the second time we have had photos taken of other people without consent inside the cafe and next time I won’t be so kind as to not show the same respect by posting the anonymous posters photos all over Facebook. But I must say we are so appreciative of the support we have received today it restores our faith in our community ❤️
