To everyone out there working in this weather 🌧️🐑☕
Today, while we were working away in the dry tunnel house, we stopped for a moment and looked out across the property. There were temporary rivers appearing where paths and gardens used to be, little lakes forming in places that definitely were not designed to be waterfront, and our 148 Prime flock looking very wet, very bedraggled, and more than a little grumpy.
It made us think of everyone out there working in the weather, especially the farmers. This is not to take anything away from anyone else who works outside for a living. There are plenty of you in all sorts of jobs who have to pull on the wet-weather gear, put your head down, and get on with it. But for farmers, especially in weather like this, the worry doesn’t stop at keeping yourself, your family, and your staff feed and safe. You are also thinking about hundreds, sometimes thousands, of little lives 🐑🐄🦌 relying on you for feed, shelter, care, and a calm head when the weather is doing its absolute best to be an assh**e.
We see that, and we appreciate it.❤️ Without farmers, our restaurant simply wouldn’t exist. Our supermarket shelves would mostly empty and what was left we are not entirely sure we could call food. And definitely nothing we would want to eat. If we could offer every farm in Southland a giant umbrella, we absolutely would!. Unfortunately, all we can do is send a bit of warmth from the heart.❤️
This is not an ad, and it is not us trying to tempt anyone out for dinner. We know full well that right now your thoughts are on stock feed, shelter, pasture rotation, water levels, fences, gateways, and whether your socks will ever be properly dry again. As for your own wellbeing? Knowing farmers, that may be somewhere around number 47 on the list, just below “check the weather again” and “pretend this raincoat still works.”
So, to every farmer, contractor, tradie, gardener, roadside worker, delivery driver, emergency worker, and every other hardy soul out there in the wet. We are thinking of you. Hang in there, keep the coffee close, keep the wet-weather gear within arm’s reach, and most importantly, keep checking in on each other. And next time you drive past someone working in the rain, give them a toot and a wave. It might not dry their boots, but it might just make them smile for a second. Everyone Stay safe, and may all our raincoats find their way back to the cupboard soon. 💛🌧️ (Oh, and to our family on the West Coast, this one is very much for you too. 🥰)
