REFLECTING ON HAMILTON'S MATARIKI CELEBRATIONS

We've just returned from Hamilton's Matariki celebrations at the lake where we met many people at our candy stand (see previous post below).

First of all, this was a fantastic event, well organised by the Hamilton City Council. Thank you to all involved for your hard work and professional approach; we appreciate your mahi pai greatly.

Secondly, this event prompted us to reflect on the origin and meaning of Matariki. Here's what we found, and it was good to refresh our knowledge:

WHAT IS MATARIKI (in brief)

Matariki is the Māori name for the Pleiades star cluster. Its name is an abbreviation of Ngā Mata o te Ariki Tāwhirimātea ("The eyes of the god Tāwhirimātea").

The cluster's appearance in midwinter signifies the Māori New Year and is a time for remembrance, celebrating the harvest, and looking forward to the future. It's also a time for families and friends to celebrate together.

Kia pai to rā!
