Hi everyone, it’s time to start presenting historical aspects of Frankton.
My good friend Tom Andrews, owner of Classics Museum, says that it’s important to know where you’ve come from, to know where you’re going. I’ll come back to him and that peach of advice in my next post.
I have been generously given permission to use material from 2 publications - ‘ Frankton ‘ authored by Barry Lafferty, and ‘ From Bath to Hingaia ‘ authored by Dick Jolly.
For the most part, I will reprint sections verbatim. The perceptually astute amongst you will say that it will save me from having to think for myself. And there’s a fair measure of truth in that. There’s a school of thought that warns against overuse of the body. I have given that a fair, large, and liberal interpretation to include the brain. Too much thinking, or over thinking, can quickly deplete one’s energy.
Plus, my confidence has been recently dented by having some words verbally corrected by my recently turned 4 years old grandniece , Mya. I have to say the daycare she attends, Rotokauri Early Education Center is outstanding.
But I digress. Back to the lane I am meant to be swimming in - Frankton. A wonderful suburb that tugs on many people’s hearts.
I will extrapolate in my next post …….
In the meantime, if you’re wanting to have a close up look at the above publications, see me at the Frankton Market on Saturday, and you can view the rare photos and text.

Hi everyone, the Market is closed this Saturday 25th ( Anzac Day ), and rightfully so, to honour the fallen ones.
My good friend and artist Bruce McLachlan, has captured in drawing some images relating to the World Wars that I have had in my head for a very long time.

The backstory is that when I was at Boys High School, a number of sports teams would travel to Auckland to compete against Auckland Grammar. On one such trip, the bus was travelling along the old State Highway 1 between TeKawhata and Mercer. As we passed a bus stop, I noticed, yet again, a very elegantly dressed woman, perhaps around 45 years old, standing holding flowers. On previous trips to Auckland, I had seen her and thought nothing of it, except perhaps that she was waiting for a bus to take her to the big city.
So we did our sports, and in the early afternoon on the return trip, saw that she was still standing at the bus stop. This piqued my interest, and I asked the driver if he knew the reason why.
He did, and explained to me that she lost her husband in the War, but did not ( even after decades ) give up on the hope that he would return. Accordingly, she would get dressed up every day, and wait at the bus stop for him to return.
When the enormity of this sunk into my head, and even though I was a teenage boy, it moved me to tears. The collateral damage to wars is widespread, and love is profoundly deep.

Fast forward to now and my sense of gratitude has not tapered off for the countless numbers of our brave soldiers, who after having to eat cold food from tins, try to get some sleep on a sack in a trench, and then be ordered to climb out, rifle in hand, and run straight into enemy machine gun fire. All this sacrifice, and now we can live the lives we have today.

So honour the quantum sacrifice by making it home, and loving everyone there, because many courageous Kiwis didn’t.

Hi everyone, I’m mindful that today’s a holiday and you might be in relaxation mode, and rightfully so.
Two matters .
Firstly, Frankton Market is open tomorrow 4th April from 8am to 1pm, if you’re looking for an outing for your family.
Secondly, from the end of this month, I will be posting regularly about Frankton’s history, with facts and images of the wonderful and unique nature of this suburb.
After coming from India at a young age, I am grateful to have grown up here.

Hi everyone, it’s that time again and I trust 2025 has been a great year for you. Perhaps swings and roundabouts as for most of us.
Christmas is, of course, next Thursday and our Market is open tomorrow ( 20th December ) for those, who like me, have a propensity to shop last minute.
My late father, who had a fruit and vege shop in Frankton, used to say that the best fruit was that which was picked last. I lean on that ideology to explain my urgency close to the day of giving.
So, if you’re still looking for something special, for all the loves of your life, come down and browse. We’ll be glad to see you.
If you prefer to do your shopping after Christmas, take note that Frankton Market will be open every Saturday 8am to 1pm through December and January.
Best wishes to you all.
Travel safe.

Hi everyone, due to the inclement weather recently on Saturdays, I have received numerous calls enquiring if the Market is open.
The answer, of course, has always been ‘Yes’, and, in fact, during the 36 years that I have been coordinating Frankton Market, it has never been closed because of the weather.
And bear in mind that there has been times when the conditions have been epic, with much angst due to damaged products, and broken tents. Even in heavy rain, gazebos can be about as effective as a screen door on a submarine !
As an aside, if there’s anyone out there, perhaps a friend of a friend, that can control the weather, I am happy to consider a subscription or contractual agreement that would guarantee that every Saturday is sunny and wind free.
This, though, is not likely and nonetheless we will carry on. As a rule of thumb, stall holders are typically hardy and resilient, and as a Market community we will put on as good a set up as possible throughout the next few months.
Our Market is on a growth trajectory, and with the adjacent kids playground, worth a visit, wet or fine. We appreciate your patronage.
Also adjacent is a good variety of businesses, cafes, and, in my opinion, the best offering of Opportunity shops in Hamilton.
Plus an excellent new medical facility, The Good Doctor Commerce Street Medical Centre which is open Monday-Saturday and Public Holidays.
See you in Frankton !

Hi everyone, counting down to next Wednesday and everything this special day brings to you in terms of enjoyment.
Thanks for all your support during this year and from everyone at our Market, we hope you have an excellent Christmas, and a brilliant year in 2025.
The Market is open tomorrow, plus the 28th December, and right through January, 8am to 1pm.

Hi everyone, well it’s that time of the year again with the 25th approaching quickly. If there’s a fast track month of the calendar year, it’s definitely December. To describe it as a blur is an understatement. It starts off amicably enough on the 1st, and the next thing you know, it’s the 25th and ( in my experience )if you’re shopping for presents on that day, there’s extremely limited selection. Trust me, ice cream is very hard to wrap and give as a Xmas present.
So on the subject of selection, let’s help you out at the Frankton Market, and our good neighbours across the road Reach17. In the Market, we have a variety of items for the unique gift that you’re looking for. I have included images of art and carving done by Bryan of Ngarara Artz, as well as other stalls. Make it day for the family with our popular food, and adjacent playground.
Our neighbour, Reach 17, is having a clearance sale and therefore worth a visit. They are located at 13 ( the geniuses who read this will figure out the symbiotic connection that this post is also on the 13th, and there’s 13 photos )Kent Street.
So come on down - we’re open from 8am to 1pm.

Hi everyone, it’s been a while since the last post - winter weather can be inclement, and we look to get through it as best as we can.
However, and despite my predilection to or bias for the concept of Occam’s Razor ( see a previous post ), I will shift into my right brain hemisphere and presume a sunny day tomorrow. So come on down to our Market. There’s a kids playground ( my thanks to Hamilton City Council ), a good variety of hot food, and general stalls.
For those of you who are on the Māori electoral roll, there’s still time to vote in the Hamilton Kirikiriroa Maaori Ward by-election 2024.
Voting thus far has been very low ( less than 6% ), so make sure you have your say.
Candidate Henderson will be at our Market tomorrow between 11am - 1pm to interact with the public, and help with any queries.

Hi everyone, in previous posts you may have realised that I have a Zen like approach to the weather - faithful to the concept of one day at a time, and it will be what it is on the day.
However, forecasts flirt with me and try to entice me ahead of time with promises of sunshine and the pleasure to be had, as compared to the mundane of wind and rain.
Right now, the temptation is there for the hedonistic good times that can be had tomorrow. I will, however, stay true to what I have today - a gloriously beautiful day and enjoy the moment.
If it is replicated tomorrow, come on down to the Market and check out an Island food stall that’s doing great business. It’s run by the Voice of Christ Full Gospel Church, and has an impressive offering. Plus they have a clothes and accessories stall located nearby.
I also would like to thank the recent new followers to our page. Thank you for being on the journey as we continue to grow Frankton Market.

Hi everyone, sunny day, a light breeze, and a nice vibe at our Market today. Come down if you’re looking for an outing.
