The last few kilometres of a day on the Wilderness Trail tend to involve some very specific thoughts:
A hot shower.
Something cold to drink.
A proper dinner.
And a bed that doesn’t need to be packed away again in the morning...

That’s the part of the trail experience we know rather well.

Riders can finish the day with us with secure bike storage, e-bike charging, a welcoming bar, dinner and a comfortable place to stay - all in the heart of Kumara.

You don’t need to be staying at the Theatre Royal to claim a table.

Our restaurant is as much a place for West Coast locals as it is for travellers passing through Kumara - somewhere to meet, settle in and enjoy dinner without rushing off again.

Add good food, a little hotel character and the likelihood of hearing at least one decent story from the bar, and you have a very good reason not to cook tonight.

1876 → 2026.

When the Theatre Royal first opened its doors, Kumara was booming, gold fever was running high and the town was attracting people from around the world.

150 years later, those doors are still open.

The rooms are warmer.
The beds are considerably more comfortable.
And thankfully, you no longer need to strike gold before ordering dinner.

But the heart of the place remains the same: good hospitality, good stories and a proper West Coast welcome.

Here’s to 150 years of the Theatre Royal 🥂
