"NZ's largest telescope under the stars! 🔭

The MOA (Microlensing Observations in Astrophysics) telescope is located on top of Mt John in the heart of the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve.

Its 1.8 metre mirror is dedicated to searching for distant exoplanets using a technique called gravitational microlensing: detecting tiny changes in the brightness of stars when an unseen planet passes in front of them.

Unlike many telescopes that capture stunning images of galaxies and nebulae, MOA spends it's time monitoring millions of stars toward the centre of the Milky Way, helping astronomers discover planets that would otherwise be impossible to detect.

It's pretty special to photograph our own Milky Way arching above a telescope that's helping uncover worlds hidden within it."

A throwback worth bringing back for Te Wiki o te Reo Māori 😂

Over at Agrodome, one of their manuhiri put his te reo Māori to very good use during his visit… with a little Jurassic Park energy thrown in for good measure 🦖

Definitely one to watch until the end.
