Today’s pensioners dessert was certainly not one for the faint-hearted. A raspberry & white chocolate cake, a thin layer of raspberry icing, topped with a Southland sized layer of raspberry & white chocolate cheesecake.

And yes… it really was as big as it looks. A few of our ladies asked me what size baking tray I used.

Fun fact: I didn’t have one big enough 😅 So with a bit of cardboard, tinfoil, baking paper, duct tape and some questionable kitchen engineering, I made my own. Sometimes you just have to improvise and get the vision across the line lol 🤷‍♀️😂

It set. It survived. The pensioners loved it. Some went home in takeaway containers for tonight’s dessert, and most importantly, I am no longer responsible for one enormous cheesecake. Success!

Welcome to spring in the south 🌧️
Horizontal hail stones, Gale-force winds, relentless rain and temperatures cold enough that the fire has officially been lit again.

So today’s menu at home required absolutely no fancy business.
Just good ole humble porridge that Aj made us. Loaded with butter, cream and brown sugar. Nostalgia, warmth, hearty and comforting, exactly what a day like this calls for.

A warm puku, a roaring fire, and quietly rocking away watching the weather roll through.

A really constructive evening at the Anchorage last night. Thank you to everyone who came along and took the opportunity to be part of the conversation around the Invercargill District Spatial Plan and what the future could look like for Motupōhue Bluff.

There were plenty of thoughtful discussions around what is working, what needs strengthening, the challenges and opportunities ahead of us, and importantly the things our community values and wants to see protected.

These face-to-face conversations matter, they give our community the opportunity to put forward local knowledge, lived experience, concerns and ideas directly to the people involved in planning for the future.

Thank you to the ICC planning team and consultants who came down to Bluff to listen, answer questions and hear directly from our community, and to everyone who gave their time and contributed to the kōrero.

TE WIKI O TE REO MĀORI ❤️🖤🤍
We thought we’d have a little fun with Te Wiki o te Reo Māori and share some of the kupu you’ll regularly hear us use here at Hayz At The Anchorage.

Te reo Māori is naturally woven into our everyday kaupapa, through our kōrero, our manaakitanga, our kai stories and, of course, the beautiful kai we gather, prepare and showcase from here in Murihiku.

So whānau, have a swipe through and give these ones a go.
Ika. Inanga. Karengo. Pāua. Kōura. Kūtai. Tio. Hāmana. Tītī. Kina.
Some you might already know. Some might be completely new. And that’s all good.

Don’t be discouraged if you’re still learning or you’re unsure of yourself. Every kupu learned is another kupu understood, and every time we hear someone giving te reo Māori a go, we appreciate the effort.

Te Wiki o te Reo Māori is a celebration of our language and its continued revitalisation, but learning doesn’t have to feel complicated. Sometimes it can begin with something as simple as the kai sitting in front of us.

To everyone who learns a new kupu, asks what something means, practises the pronunciation, or simply gives it a crack, ka mau te wehi 🫶

MEN’S HEALTH DAY 2026 | SATURDAY 26 SEPTEMBER - This is a kaupapa we’re proud to get behind.
Men’s Health Day is happening at Invercargill Central Mall on Saturday 26 September, with a full day dedicated to checking in, having real conversations, connecting with support and most importantly reminding our tāne that looking after themselves matters too.

There’ll be activities happening throughout the day, plenty to get involved in, and some pretty awesome prizes up for grabs along the way. Yep, we’ve thrown a few Hayz at the Anchorage meal vouchers into the prize pool too 🙋‍♀️

For us, supporting kaupapa like this goes beyond being a restaurant. Manaakitanga is about caring for people. It’s about looking out for one another, making space for kōrero and making sure our people know they don’t have to carry everything alone.

A special acknowledgement to Joseph Davidson, who has been the driving force behind bringing this event together. Thank you for reaching out and including us, as well as the mahi you’ve put into making this happen.

So grab your mates, your dads, brothers, uncles, sons and the rest of the whānau and head along.

Fresh, crispy battered blue cod and chips from Borry at Bluff kitchen , an ice-cold L&P, and Argyle Beach providing the dining room.

Nothing flash, Just bloody good fresh kai, a beautiful little corner of the world and home 💙 Pretty iconic really 🙌
