Dear Customers and Friends,

There is something I want share with you today…

The past 18 months has been tough for everyone. If you can remember what life was like in 2019; it is like we are in a completely different world now. Sometimes it feels unreal.

We opened Mela just two months before the first lockdown. Opening a new restaurant isn’t easy at the best of times. Before we opened, my partner, friends, family and I spent 15 or more hours a day pouring our hearts into Mela. We did nearly all of the renovating ourselves to save what little capital we had. It is such a special place to me and we worked so hard to make it a place we could call ours. I knew it was going to be tough having a new business and was ready to be pushed to the limit. But that didn’t include a global pandemic.

When the lockdown started in 2020, obviously none of us had any idea of what was to come. The first lockdown was terrifying, but there was still a strong sense of optimism. Every time lockdown would ease, it brought me little moments of hope that things would get back to normal. Through it all, we have always tried to stay positive. But now it’s been two years and after a rollercoaster of lockdowns and restrictions, I feel like a boxer in the ring getting punched without been able to defend myself. It is still possible to get up, but with less energy every time.
There is still a lot of uncertainty in the world and I do not feel safe to continue holding out for something that might not happen.
I have worked beyond my limit. My mental health has been seriously affected, my body is tired of staying 18 hours a day in the kitchen to keep the dream of owning a restaurant alive.
My team and I have achieved so much in the last two years and I am unbelievably proud.

Unfortunately, that hasn’t been enough and I’m taking an important decision today:

Mela will do its last service on Saturday the 29th of January before closing its doors permanently.

I would like to thank all our customers, friends and suppliers for the incredible support I have received in this time. It has been a great adventure that I will never forget!

We all know the feeling: You excitedly open up a gift from someone only to discover yet another mug you don’t need or some holiday hand soap that’ll end up collecting dust under the kitchen sink. Ugh. It’s the worst, right? But on the other side of things, shopping for anyone is actually really hard. It’s so easy to just grab something basic from the store when you don’t know what to get that one hard-to-shop-for person on your list.
